Intermittent ticking noise after warming up

Hello everyone.

I hope you're all doing well.

I recently decided, after 6 years of riding my beloved 125cc motorcycle, I have become experienced enough for an upgrade. Hence my recent purchase of a Honda Rebel 500. Love that thing!

Bought it secondhand at 8000 kilometers (around 5000 miles). I am now at 14000 kilometers (8700 miles). I just did my first oil change on this vehicle. It's got a parallel twin with DOHC.

THE PROBLEM
I've noticed that a light ticking/knocking noise has started to appear from within my engine.

  • The ticking only starts after the engine has warmed up.
  • I can actually feel the vibrations of the ticks when seated, notably more on the right side of my body, through my foot and hand.
  • The ticking noise is in perfect sync with the engine tempo. I'm not sure at which stroke it appears.
  • The ticks come and go in little streaks of about 3-10.
  • The ticking noise appears to be becoming more frequent.

I want to say they only happen at low rpm, but the symptoms are so unnoticeable (very subtle vibrations and quiet sound) there's no way for me to detect them when riding at speed.

WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR
Nothing. The ticking was already there before I did my oil change. I do not want to open anything up before getting advice from people more experienced than me. Below a video, which you might want to listen to using headphones:

Click to watch the video (around 5x ticks starting around 0:05 and stopping around 0:06)

WHAT I'M STRUGGLING WITH
The fact that the ticking noise only begins after warming up suggests the problem has a relation with temperature. Something must be expanding and is then hitting something. Perhaps:

  • Loose timing chain, expanding just enough to start bucking about (+ sits at the right side of the engine)?
  • Loose clutch basket (+ also sits at the right side of the engine)?
  • Something with valve clearance? I think this one is unlikely since the ticks appear once for every ignition stroke, and there's two cylinders ... which would mean both sets of valves started getting issues at the same moment?... Otherwise, the ticks would be one-off-one-off!

Thanks everyone!

Sorry for the late reply. Since the rattling came from inside, it meant I'd have to open up the engine to investigate. I do not have the equipment to do that so I did not - instead going to a certified Honda dealership (where I bought it).

I shared my experience and the owner explained that it could indeed be the timing chain, or its adjuster. However, he later came back to say that my adjuster appeared to be oil-regulated (instead of using the classic tension system), meaning a rattling sound from that part is unlikely. In the end, I did not obtain a technical explanation, only a reassuring "it's probably nothing, you may have simply not noticed it in the beginning."

Even though I am 100% sure the ticking was not there when I started riding this bike, I'll trust the shops expertise and leave it at that for now.

Hi everyone. I'd like to come back to this topic with the solution.

I went to a different shop, because frankly, I did not trust the last one. This new shop found the timing chain rattling due to a broken adjuster.

At first they did not believe my symptoms and suspicions either, due to the bike only having 15000 kilometers, but at least they actually investigated it!

Will be looking to get my money back from that first shop since the bike is still under warranty and they failed to detect a factory issue.

Hope this helps anyone else.
