(READ THE -GRAMMAR- VERY CAREFULLY)

Hello,

Thanks for the swift response, just to let you know that I'm okay with
the condition of the item, I'm ready to sealed the deal with you ,I
will be paying you $1400 (i asked 1200 not 1400) for the Item and I will be responsible for
all the shipping expenses,(ok that's fine.. but wait...) I want to buy it for my dad in Indiana,my
method of payment is through PayPal (questionable at this point, but not a true RED FLAG yet) cos its very secure, fast and
reliable, kindly get back to me with your PayPal account email or send
me an invoice through PayPal if you are a registered user of PayPal,if
you are not PayPal user i will advice you that PayPal is the best way
to transfer and receive money online, you can get an account with them
at www.paypal.com but you don't have to do this if you already have an
account, Just get back to me with your PayPal account email or invoice
from PayPal so i can proceed with the
payment as soon as possible . I'll be responsible for the pick-up
and the pick up money will be included in your payment to avoid delay
and to enable shipping agent to schedule an appropriate and convenient
time for the pick-up at your location (Wait wait.. did you catch that? the thing i said wasn't a true red flag yet JUST BECAME a true red flag.. Did you see what he said? "I'll pay you MORE so YOU can pay the shipping yourself... why?... hmm.... why? WHY wouldn't he pay the shipper HIMSELF? why does he want ME to do it??? )

I would have really love to come for the viewing but due to my work
frame that might not be possible, I'm a Marine Officer, I'm on the
ship now,but might want to have a good look,if you have the pics. (so, justifying his absence with the fact that he is "on some boat somewhere in the middle of the ocean" and not.. well .. in some other state... some other country. something like that.. too convenient right?)
Please do get back to me with your paypal email account or send me an
invoice so i can make out payment.

Regards...
(no name at the end.. though it is in his email address.. doesn't want to have to remember who he says he is at any given time.)

OK........ synopsis...

WHY would he pay me MORE than the bike is worth, and have me pay the shipping house? any IDIOT knows that you can go online, schedule shipping, pickup and delivery to and from anywhere in the ****ing world and pay with a credit card...... unless there's a motive...

so... here's what i dug up through a little bit of common sense and research.

The guy gives me 1400 for the bike, and maybe 700 to ship the bike. he calls and sets up the shipping, almost definitely in a fake name. they show up at my house, grab the bike... i pay the guys 700 to take it and deliver it..

it goes to Indiana where he has some friends pick it up at the dock, load it into a truck, and drive off with it...

He calls up paypal and says " WHOOWW WHOOWW I NEVER authorized this transaction!!!!!!!!!!

"hmm.. we'll look into it... wow.. yeah.. it says here that the item was shipped to indiana"

YEAH BUT.. I LIVE IN KANSAS! WHY WOULD I NEED SOMETHING SHIPPED TO INDIANA!"

good point.. let's look a little deeper.... the person Mitch Berry was the one that PAID for the shipping to indiana.... He's the one that signed the bill of lading and the one who collected the money.....

and before long, it would be deduced that i, or whomever bought the bike stole the credit card number, and had an item shipped to indiana...

undoubtedly, BOB SMITH from indiana picked it up... they cant contact bob smith, so they turn around and charge ME $2000 and potentially investigate me for FRAUD.......

Why am i posting this???????

because quite honestly, I DONT SEE ENOUGH of these kinds of posts online. you always hear about "online scams" but.. they are getting BETTER AND BETTER, and i hope that EVERYONE HERE reads this and is made aware of the kind of **** that's out there. if you sell something on craigslist, or even EBAY, this same **** can happen.

i read accounts of 3 or 4 people that this exact thing happened to, and they ended up going to court fighting for their innocence over an item that was stolen from THEM.

and it's about 99% guaranteed that this email stems from Nigeria.. It's 100% proven that the nigerians use the money they steal from the US to fund their civil war and genocide... they use it to help smuggle blood diamonds, buy guns, RPG's, ammo, etc... i have more i could say about that, but i think it would make people think poorly of me, so i'll keep my mouth shut...

but seriously.... look out for **** like this..... if it is in the least bit questionable, don't do it.... "CASH ONLY.......... come pick it up yourself.. load it in the back of a truck and hand me cash....!"

basically, i emailed him back and said to tell me who he banks with, and that i would open an account there, and he could have the money transfered, and that i wouldn't pay a shipping company directly. he would have to do it, and that i would have to check out the shipping company to make sure they were legit, licensed, bonded, and insured before i agreed to ship.

i -WONT- sell it to this guy no matter what... i'll conveniently "sell" the bike. but.. i would like to see how far he goes to try to scam me.

he'll either write me back saying that i'm trying to scam him, or he won't respond back at all...

exactly..... especially considering the lack of communication we had prior to that..

"hello"

"hi"

"ok here's what's going to happen.. i'm going to steal 2,000 and a motorcycle from you ok ? ok? lets do it.. hurry up.. lets get it done.. come on"

sad part is, people fall for this **** eeeeeevery day.. especially people who are NEW to computers or online selling.. i said i found a few accounts of that happening.. well that was after about 5 minutes of searching. i'm sure there are thousands of accounts of it happening. paypal hasn't REALLY addressed the issue yet.

Yep they try that **** all the time. Brother in law was selling an oak entertainment stand on craigs list. He got a similar email from some guy wanting to give him more money than he was selling it for, and would schedule pick up....blah blah blah. Brother in law wasted no time in telling the guy to f--- off.

lolol... i must not be THAT smart though, otherwise i'd be the ones running the scams.... instead i own a legit business. But.. the **** i see people get away with every day, really makes me wonder....

seriously, i've seen good people go to prison, or lose a law suit, for **** they didn't have anything to do with, or had no control over...

yet, every day people run scams like this and never get caught.

nothing happens to them. at least not that we know of.

part of me wants to say "when are they going to get off their asses and step things up a little bit"

but then the other side of me says "i can live with people getting scammed once in a while if it means not having to have government cameras in my house watching my every move."

I've gotten this one twice when emailing questions about a couple bike listings:
Hi ,
There are 16292 miles on it, the bike is in great condition, has been properly maintained, has never been laid down or abused in any way. it has a clean title and the price I'm selling it for is $2960, which is including all charges. I used to live in Chicago IL but I'm currently in UK (London) for 4 months with my working, the bike is stored at UPS warehouse the title and all paperwork is along with the bike in their possession. the bike is for sale only for shipping through via UPS Overnight so you can receive them in about 48 hours ( with tracking # ) .you will have a 14-day return policy starting with the day you receive the bike, so you will have the chance to test and inspect it before funds are released. if you decide to keep it, they have the Power of Attorney so they will transfer the title into your name and release me the funds, if not they will be responsible for the return shipping and you will have a complete refund within 3 days.
If you are interested to buy the bike i will do this transaction only through eBay. to start the official transaction I need your full name and delivery address, I forward it to eBay and they will notify you with all the instructions how to purchase the bike from me (payment, shipping, return policy etc.).
Please check my feedback : http://myworld.ebay.com/the*ocean
I will wait your reply
Thank You
Exact same reply for both bikes, different email though.

really? they think that you'll believe that UPS will overnight a motorcycle? or, that UPS will hold power of attorney over a motorcycle, or... that UPS has storage warehouses for people's ****? or that ups will hold the titles and information to the bike, or will be an intermediary between sellers?

wtf? too many holes in that to list... and if they DID actually offer those things, they don't do a very good job of advertising them. and.. why would they.. they just ship stuff...

horrible..

the unfortunate part is, you can flag the listing, but they'll just come back with another one. there's no stopping them.

at least the one i posted was good, and lost of people would consider it legit if they didn't look into it... that one is just plain wrong and unbelievable on every level.

aside from that, his ebay feedback is all for concert tickets.. not motorcycles. lol... it IS a legit ebay though..

Yeah, I did laugh at that.

I work for FedEx Express (ground / kinkos / LTL / etc. are all separate) and we could easily ship that stuff, but there's no way we'd store it for people.

I know we've shipped cars though (it came in on the morning plane and I work evenings, so I missed it), it was for a manager that was moving from Puerto Rico; so I don't think they'd do it for a customer without charging them something outrageous because of how much space it took up on the plane.

OK, we know the Scammers, how about those stupid Spammers. I'm selling some old gear on CL right now, and I got 4 emails this morning, all from different address's, and all have something in the subject that doesn't match anything I'm selling, and all 4 emails say this exactly word for word:

Hi

I see you live in bakersfield, I am located there also.

Anyway, I checked out your posting. Look, you don't have to get cash for 2005 Honda VTX 2k miles only! (Bakersfield).

Observe my site for other road to take.

I got notification yesterday that the Australian Department of Taxation was going to give me a refund. All I had to do was contact a site given. Seems they must have a lot of money to give away, since I've never been anywhere near Australia! Seems the web address of the contact had the ru abbreviation - Russia... imagine that, Australia contracting with a Russian to distribute tax refunds.

And boy am I gonna get richer yet. Seems the Nigerian Government is cracking down on scams. I can get over $900,000 from them by simply calling a number in that email to give them my background information...

I guess that old P.T. Barnum saying must be true - there is a sucker born every minute. Glad I was born on the 30 second count.

They keep doig this stuff because there are no repercussions. No one is ever going to prosecute them. Even with credit card number theft in this country, no one does anything about it. I know; my number was stolen three times last year. The credit card company credited me, but did nothing to catch the perpetrators. This was in the US, and stuff was bought and a shipping address given, and the credit card bank would do nothing to find out who did this. Heck, even I found out exactly what was purchased and from where; I called the place the stuff was ordered from but they would not give me the purchaser's name or shipping address; they would only do that if the police asked. Not hard to imagine why people commit cc and identity theft all the time and in huge numbers--no one ever prosectues them. Can you imagine a crime with virtually no chance of punishment?

Mike, ****ed at these thieves

You betcha

Before I retired, I worked for a major bank for many years as a fraud investigator. When I first started it was an interesting job because we actually went after the bad guys. We put a lot of guys in jail for credit card fraud. As time went by thought things changed. The guys in the suits at the bank realized that it COST MONEY to put the bad guys away. We became little more than paper pushers, writing off fraud charges, charging them back to merchants where possible. finding ways to stop the fraud up front...The Bad guys never even got a slap on the wrist. If you ever get a criminal bent of mind, credit card fraud is the way to go.

Well, my identity was just stolen and some crazy person let them buy a brand new motorcycle in MY name!!! LOL, crazy huh?

But seriously, I HAVE had my identity stolen and I was told that they would only actually prosecute if the charges exceeded 10k. I caught it at the 5k mark...makes you think. Could be an easy way to make money off yourself. Open up a fraudulent credit card using an online app and when you get the card just max it out at the ATM for cash...that's basically what this chick did and she didn't get into any trouble at all. I was broke at the time, woulda been nice if she cut me in on the deal!!!

Here's a new one, too bad too, $2900 for a 2006 GSX-R 750 woulda been nice.

First of all I want to tell you that I am not selling this bike for profit or due a lack of money. All I can say is that some recent events in my life made me change my perception of certain things, things that Iโ€™ve considered important in the past. I will donate all money to charity after I sell this bike. I am currently on a trip for UNICEF.

The bike has a clear title, is in an excellent condition, no dents or scratches, it was always garaged and regular maintenance and oil changes were done in time. Hasnโ€™t been involved in an accident or flood damage. The motor runs very well. I donโ€™t want to offend you but the bike is priced for a fast sale so please if you intend to apply for a loan or financing do not reply.

The transaction will be made through eBay company for the safety of both. Iโ€™ve already included the bike into eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection, so I will sell only through this.

If you want to buy the bike, and you agree with my terms please reply so I can give you a detailed description of the eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection.

Waiting for your reply.

Thank you,Suzane
Googled "eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection" 'cause I've never heard of it and first thing that comes up is it's a scam that's been used on the East Coast CL for awhile (since 2008-ish)

oh yeah.... forgot about this thread... for what it's worth, after i sent my demands, i never heard from that person again. but i did find that somehow or another they also emailed my yahoo account that i never use.. i'm not sure at all how they got it.. no one knows it... weird... but it was the same exact email they sent to my main email.. dunno.......

on another note, it's funny how even friends will try to scam you..

one of my friends owns a competing company to mine, and we were talking about a potential partnership, and he drew up a contract. long story short, the contract says that they can take us to court for any reason, but we can't take them to court for any reason, and if either of our companie's owners so much as get a traffic ticket, take it to court, and lose, we're in breach of contract, and all of the funds due to us are assimilated into their company, and we don't get them. oh.. and they can take us to court for unforeseen damages that may have occured.. not to mention that every piece of software that i've written for my company up to the point of the contract (including proprietary software, the website, and anything else i've developed to make the business run, as well as intellectual property, advertising, EVERYTHING), as well as during and after the contract belongs to them solely.. of course all of this was written in legaleze but, that's the gist of it...

wtf??????? so long story short, i'm proposing a counter offer that will blow the deal out of the water and essentially end negotiations diplomatically. lol or.. if they go for it, we'll stand to get a fair and equitable financial gain....

the world is full of snakes... it really is... i think i'm the only one in the world who would have written a fair and balanced contract from the get go that is mutually beneficial and covers both companies asses from each other's in case various things happened negatively.

Scams can cost folks a lot of money but there is one that has been going around for a while that can get you killed. Someone advertises say a motorcycle and wants cash only. They give you and address and you go to make the purchase and a few guys take your money and either beat the heck out of you or kill you.

Or they will come up with a reason they need to meet you somewhere to finalize the transaction and of course it is a secluded place and you are screwed.

My advice it you are going to by something donโ€™t use cash, cashiers check only. If it sounds like a scam call your local PD and have them check it out.

lolol.. yeah... they wrote me back... they basically said that the contract was taken from the IRS, and revised by a lawyer, then further revised by them to suit our needs, and that if we wanted to change the terms of the contract, then we will expect less pay out because of "all of the work" their doing for us (absolutely none).. they got very defensive about the fact that we didn't want to give up our constitutional rights in contract form to a company and not be able to defend ourselves if something were to happen / which inevitably would...

actually he said in so many words (paraphrasing) "it's just a contract" and he alluded to the fact that even if it "says" something, doesn't mean that's exactly the case. in texas, a verbal gentleman's agreement (a handshake and a man's good word) will stand up in court, however, it is ALWAYS trumped by a written contract.

therefore, he could say "yeah none of this really matters.. it's just a piece of paper... it doesn't matter" then when any 1 term is broken, they could take us to court under the guidelines of the contract..

wow....
