Need your help guys!

I am having trouble with my Triumph 2006 Sprint ST 1050. It does not want to start using the starter switch on the handle bars. If I use my by pass switch that I made and connected to the starter solenoid, I can start the bike without any problems!

I have already replaced the starter relay and starter solenoid. The battery was on my list to replace since it is about four years old. So, I did replace the battery just for your information. The starter works fine since the bike will start using my by pass switch. I have checked all the fuses and all tested OK.

I opened up the starter switch on the bars and it looks fine, no broken wires or corrision. When I turn on the ignition switch the instruments power up, no problem. Th eengine kill switch is working fine. If the bike is running and I engage the kill switch it kills the engine. If I start the bike and put it in gear and lower the side stand the engine will shut off too.

So, I am getting frustrated trying to locate the problem. Please help me.

Thanks, Mike

Have you checked the neutral safety switch?
I have seen this on other bikes but I'm not sure if it's applicable to yours....the ignition control module has given bike owners and mechanics alike a world of grief in the past with other OEM brands of bikes. The start switch usually sends a voltage signal to the ECM that discerns that all the safety switches are within proper parameters and then allows voltage to leave the ECM and trigger a relay that in turn provides power to the starter solenoid that engages the starter motor. If the ECM or the relay are not sending voltage to the starter solenoid, you end up with a scenario like yours where a by-pass voltage supply works but the normal system doesn't.
I hope this info is of some use to your problem.

The bike starts in neutral and will also start in gear with the kick stand uo and the clutch lever pulled in.

Good tip on the ignition control modules! It could be the ICM but I am trying the simplier stuff first.

Thanks for the input.

might still be the ignition switch - the solenoid and ignition will probably be on a different pole of the switch than the clocks.
get a wiring diagram and work through it methodically.
you haven't lost a main fuse have you?? between the ignition and the solenoid?
if you're really stuck mail or ring triumph in the uk - they offer great support.

Ok, here's an update. I have now checked the following, starter relay, starter solenoid, all fuses, starter, and battery. All of the above items have passed the test. So, what else do you guys think I should look at???

I have made a bi-pass switch on the starter solenoid so at least I can start the bike and still use it for work.

I opened up the starter switch and all looked OK. It is not the engine kill switch, or the nuetral switch or the ignition switch.

Looking for help here guys!!!!

I think Benny has the best suggestion at this point. Grab a schematic, a multimeter and start chasing circuits til ya find it.
I know it's probably the last thing ya wanna hear but sometimes there's just no quick fix til ya narrow the problem down.
Best of luck with it.

I was hoping for a quick fix from someone here on the forum telling me where to go look and remove and replace XYZ part and you should be good to go. I know it is just going to take a several hours at least to run down the problem! Ok, thanks for the help.

I called the local Triumph dealer and they were like "we don't have problems with that model, so we don't really know where to look for the problem" !!!

Try pulling the seat and checking the relays, I had an 06 and had the same problem once. There is another relay I think inside the fairing and if it gets water and gunk in it it will fail. The relay solved the problem on mine.

Wiring to look at!

Pull off your right fairing and look at the wiring under your starter relay! It is the 4th relay back from the front. I found 4 chaffed wires one was grounding out to the frame intermittently and two were twisted and chaffed through their insulation and bare wire was touching each other. This was caused by the fairing pushing against them. Repair the wires and give them some extra electrical tape to protect them. Then check your relay again because the shorting of the wires may have damaged the relay contacts when it arched! This fixed my 2005 sprint st 1050's starting issue! P.S you may want to remove the electrical tape on the harness first to properly assess your wiring integrity. Good luck!
