poor idling katana

I cleaned the carbs on my 93 katana 600 this winter, and now it starts a lot better than it used to, but it idles like ****! I can play with the idle speed, and it will idle OK in my driveway, but when I hit the road, it will stall at stoplights, or sometimes start revving around 4000 rpm. And, I've noticed when you crank the throttle, it's slow to drop back to idle.

Today, it stalled at a stop light. I had to walk it to a nearby parking lot. There i pushed the start button, the bike would start a little like it was receiving gas, then stall, even if i was right on the throttle. Finally I got it going by almost holding the throttle while pushing the start button.

Thoughts?

Petkock set to Prime

Could this problem be as simple as that my fuel petkock (I know it's spelled wrong, dang forum things I'm swearing!) was set to prime the whole time? I talked to a mechanic and he said I have to have my carbs cleaned professionally - I think he's trying to drum up some business. I got help cleaning them, my buddy has worked on his own bikes for years, so I think they should be pretty good. Plus, I REALLY don't want to pull them out again. Also, am I causing any lasting damage by running my bike with this problem? All I have to do is stay on the throttle and it stays running.
