Kawasaki Z 440 LTD: Good beginner bike?

Hi,

I'm looking to give riding a try this summer and have a few questions about picking the right kind of bike for me.

Since I've never really ridden, I'm looking for something cheap that will let me get my feet wet this summer and find out if the sport is for me.

I found a friend of a friend who is selling a 1982 Kawasaki Z 440 LTD for $800. It's old, but it seems to run well and the price seems in like with Kelly Blue Book. I'm really just looking for a bike that will get me through the summer, and then I'll decide if I want to buy something nicer.

I'm mostly looking for something that will be good for short distances (under 20 miles); mostly surface streets, but some freeway riding will be required. I also have this notion that if I end up enjoying it, I might take a long weekend trip from southern Michigan up into the Upper Peninsula at the end of the summer, which would involve a lot of freeway driving.

In your opinion, would a bike like this be good for longer trips? I've heard a number of people say that comfort can be a real issue on a lot of bikes if you plan on riding far (if it matters, I'm 26, 6-foot, 180 lbs). Also, does this bike have enough power to be safe on the freeway?
