I'm not sure what you are riding. The primary drive is different across brands, so a make, model, and year might help someone answer the question.

By engaged, do you mean the transmission is engaged to the engine (Clutch lever released) or the clutch has been activated (Clutch lever squeezed)?

 

I'm sorry it's a 2005 Suzuki boulevard s40 and It's belt Driven. When I let the clutch out and any gear is engaged it makes that noise any other time like in neutral or when I pull the lever in it does not. It sounds like it's coming from the tranny but the bike only has 9k on it so it shouldn't be doing this so soon.

I know this has been years ago, but I am having this exact same problem with the exact same bike with the exact same miles and am having no luck finding any other info on this issue. Did you by chance ever figure out what exactly was causing the noise? Thank you in advance.

 

Have you checked the belt tension? I've never ridden a belt drive bike, but chain slap is kind of similar, so maybe you're hearing belt slap.

 

Yes I have looked into that it is right in line where its suppose to be, I just put on a new tire about 3 months ago so it shouldent have adjusted yet.

I just did my oil change my bike calls for 2qts of oil. She has 2qts in her so if I put more won't it hurt my engine?

It isn't good for it. It has to go someplace and if you have too much in it, it goes into places it shouldn't like your intake system

 

Well as of right now it goes away once the bike warms up so I wonder if its worth the fix. Do you guys think it will hurt anything?

Just seems to me if you do "A" and the engine reacts with "B", there's a problem with "A".

 

Yes I did change it recently as well. I put Lucas motorcycle 10-40 in first and thought that may be the issue so I changed it out with Lucas motorcycle 20-50 full synthetic. I thought about swapping oil again bur figured before I would see if anyone else has the same problem. I have read about many people with this bike using the Lucas 20-50 and most seem happy with it so I thought that may be okay, but at the same time I am having a very hard time finding any info on this subject so it may very well be an oil issue.

Did you experience the problem before switching to the Lucus brand of oil? If everything was working okay before you switched to the Lucus brand of oil, maybe that's the problem. It's just a guess.

I was able to contact the seller still from when I bought it and he still remembered what he was running. Going to pick some up tomorrow and try to swap it out and see what happens.

 

how about jacking the rear wheel off the ground and rotating the tire. you will narrow the possibilities to the wheel bearing or the front drive hub.if it dont' make the noise remove the spark plug put it in gear and spin the tire, it may not make a noise while not under load

i tried that as well. It helped me narrow it down the the transmission or clutch area. Also took about everything I could think of off to check for rattles or vibrations. If the oil change doesn’t work I may try spinning with the plug out. Never thought of doing that. Would help not having the exhaust noise while trying to diagnose. Thanks for the suggestion.

Good luck with it. I can't think of anything else that wouldn't require you to start pulling parts off and checking one thing at a time.

 

I've used Lucus products in my truck almost from day one. Got it with 50,000 miles on it, now it has almost 270,000 and still runs good. So I'll not bad mouth Lucus products, it just might not be right for your particular bike.
