In the process of getting my first motorcycle and I'm wondering what people would say in their opinion are the best, coolest, or most beautiful places on the east coast to ride?

Definitely not A1A in Florida. ;)
It's hot, lots of traffic, people driving way under the speed limit on double yellow.
Everybody should go somewhere on the east coast other than FL. ๐Ÿ˜

In for answers.

I have driven a tractor-trailer truck through New York City several times, including making deliveries in Manhattan. I've also toured NYC in my personal car and circled the coastal areas of Long Island in my car.
That was pretty nice, actually.
But, if you are a beginner, I would stay out of large cities.

Q: could you get to Long Island by putting your bike on a ferry and bypassing in New York City?

I've never heard of such but I wouldn't be surprised if you'd be able to. What were you thinking of suggesting from it if it were possible?

The ferry from Bridgeport Connecticut across Long Island sound to Port Jefferson New York on Long Island only cost $39 (round trip) and for single motorcycles you do not need to have a reservation in advance --unless you're traveling in a group of more than one biker and you need your bikes kept together.

Edited to add: If you live in an area that's not too far away from Connecticut, yes I would suggest this could be a trip to take after you've had a few hundred miles of experience riding around your own city and within an hour or two of your home.

If you were asking about riding on the East Coast meaning you actually want to see the coastal areas and the water, the coastal cities, to shipyards / ports / marinas, etc.
then Long Island is pretty good for that.

The BRP is a beautiful ride, I loved it too. The only place I rank as it's equal is riding in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Iron Mountain rd, Needles Highway, Vanocker Canyon, Spearfish Canyon, and the Badlands are totally epic too.

If you want to go inland away from the coast but still stay a reasonable distance from your home in New Jersey, maybe just make it an overnight trip with one night in a motel or lodge, I'd look at riding in the Allegheny Mountain range in Northern Pennsylvania at the New York border.

And I would also consider the Catskills as somebody else mentioned in this thread-- roughly where the white circle is on this map,
and the Allegheny mountains are in the white square.

I'll try later.)
