Backfire in carb

Hi. I just purchased a 1985 Virago 700 and took it for it's first ride today. I didn't go far (it's cold in Ohio don't ya know) but I did notice a backfire in my carb. When I first brought it home on saturday, after unloading it, I took it down the driveway and back up. It backfired constantly. I let it run in the driveway for about 5 minutes and it seemed to clear up. So, I thought it did it because it was cold. So this morning I fired it up and let it run for about 5-7 minutes before taking off. It still backfired in first and second just not as much, then it didn't do it at all in any other gear. When I went to leave my brothers house to come home, I let it idle for almost 20 minutes before taking off. It didn't backfire in first or second, but it did in fourth and fifth. The bike idles a little loppy but I thought this was normal (this is my first V twin) and it revs fine. I don't know much about carb tuning, but I do have the manual for my carb. The carb is a Mikuni HS40. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks CB, I was hoping to not have to go through all of that procedure!

I just found something else while I was inspecting the carb that looks suspect. There are three hoses running off of the carb towards the rear. The best I can tell they look like breather lines of some sort. They originally ran through the frame toward the rear tire. Appearently they contacted the rear exhaust and have melted closed. Could this be part, or all, of the problem?

According to my handy little manual, they identify all three as "hose". As far as I can see in the exploded veiw and by looking at the carb, one hose leads from the bowl, and the other two come from the sides of the main body. The one hose has moisture coming out of it but it has no odor to it. Now I'm even more miffed than I was before??
