'81 Yamaha sr250 spark problem

Got an '81 Yamaha sr250 that's having spark problems. What happens is when I hit the starter button it will spark once and then won't spark again until I release the button then it will spark one more time. I know this because I hooked up my timing light to see if it was getting spark. Driving me crazy trying to sort this out. HELP!! PLEASE!!

It sounds like there is not enough current to run both the starter and the ignition system at the same time. I would start with the battery as the prime suspect.

How was the battery prepped before installation?

If the battery tests out fine, there may be a short draining power. The starter circuit would be the first place to test.

Thank you . It sometimes acts like it's having a spark drain when I leave a red light fast or take a sharp turn like pulling out of a parking lot. Then if I wait a few minutes it will get full power. I really like this bike as it is super fun to ride and gets 65 MPG in the city.

You think it could be my starter solenoid shifting? It's now secured very good. (I found this bike in the thrash)
