Ok so me and a buddy are pretty new to bikes, but both of us are willing to learn as much as we can. So here is our problem my buddy just picked up a 96 susuki gs500 from a trade and it doesn't run. As far as im told it has a spark and the engine is getting fuel, what could cause it not to run.Oh i forgot to mention we are both mechanically inclined but like i said new to the bike scene. Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

Like any other gasoline IC engine, it needs fuel and air in the proper combination, compression, and a properly timed spark.

First, find a service manual; this will be your most used tool.

Start troubleshooting with a compression test; make sure the throttle is open wide. Next, verify the fuel level in the carburetors is correct. Make sure that there is a good seal between the carburetors and intake boots, and no other obvious air leaks. Next comes timing; there should be timing marks, probably around the alternator.

You need three basic things for an engine to run:

1) The proper air/fuel mixture
2) A properly timed spark
3) Compression

The most common issue motorcycle engines run into is a gummed up fuel system, which is caused by sitting in storage with untreated fuel.

Newer engines use electronic ignition, which are way more reliable than the old manually-adjustable points. I personally have never seen one that mis-timed the spark. They can still fail, however.

A compression test can confirm or deny several issues such as a stuck valve, leaky rings, or a hole in the piston.
