IMHO what smartphone, .mp3 player, bluetooth headset & other audio gear mfr's NEED to add to their devices is a "HEAR BACKGROUND" button.

You press it and it mutes the music, phone conversation, whatever, picks up the sounds around you amplifies and plays THAT into the earbuds, speakers, headphones...

For when you hit PLAY on your Ipod, lickNstick your earbuds in, adjust the volume, strap your helmet on, put on your gloves, start your motor and THEN and the ride captain heads toward you with his or her lips flapping...

Here's a video of what I'm talking about...

Or when you're out on the open road and could SWEAR your bike is making a new sound... bearing going out....new squeak or rattle....

Most noise-cancelling setups ALREADY have a microphone, and a lot of earbuds (like the ones that come with the Iphone) do too so that could be used to pick up voices, motor sounds, wind noise, whatever.

..and then, after agreeing to follow ride protocol, signing the liability release waiver, demonstrating that you understand and will follow all hand signals given by the ride captain or his/her designated assistant, you take your assigned place in the formation, turn your music back up, seal yourself up safely back behind your visor, and head out to enjoy the freedom of the open road!
