What do you think of an 86 Lowrider?

I am in talks with a fella that has a 86' Custom Lowrider and he wants to trade me my bass boat and some boot. What I wanna know is the opinion of the year and model. Is it worth trading. He is asking about $9000 for the bike and my boat is worth about $7000. Are there things I should worry about with this bike? Was it a good one for HD? Says it is 1340CC. Look forward to your thoughts.

$9000 for an '86? That seems quite expensive for a 21 year old bike. And Harley's are beginning to not retain their value as much as they used too.

Check out this site for more info on the FXR/Low Rider/Superglide II:

I paid $7,300 for my 89, and it's the sport model loaded with aftermarket chrome and pipes. An 86 will be belt drive, evo engine and five speed, so that's all good stuff.

I love the ride and handling of my FXR, if you can get a better price, I'd say go for it. Maybe trade straight up?
WOW, I was unaware of the value of the bike for sure. And the bike is loaded for sure with all the extras and yes it is belt drive. I did not know that it would have the EVO engine on it though. I thought that was later. I was concerned that it was a tad high in price. But, without using cash then i expected that a little.

I think the last year that any bike was built with a shovel was 85, and those were just to use up stock. I love the Evo, it's strong, proven, and you can do a lot with it if you want to. And HD has a program to have it rebuilt to factory specs for about $2K. Almost any bike with the Evo, belt and 5 speed is going to be a good one. Ask any old timer or indy mechanic and they'll tell you that. I met a guy on an FXR in Sturgis over the summer with 80K on his FXR, and I've heard stories about having to rebuild them at 150K.

A little tidbit, the chassis tuning on the FXR series was done on a race track by a young Harley engineer by the name of Erik Buell.
I had read today about Buels input in this machine. The man and I are still in talks. I currently ride a 1600 Roadstar and want this as my single bike. My wife and I bought the roadstar for us. Now I want one for me.

The FXR frame is also almost exactly the same as H-D's touring bike frame, so it can handle two up easily. I wouldn't even notice my 11 yo's back there if they didn't wiggle so much. If that bike is lowered though, the ride may be rougher. Mine has 14" shocks on the back, it's smooooooooooooth.
Well I think we have reached an agreement and I will be going early in the week to go and get her. I had to put a little with it the boat but I like the bike and the fella that has it. And to me it is worth it and it is all trade no cash. I will try and post pics as soon as I bring her home.

Can't wait to see another FXR! As my Father in Law said when I was waiting out the seller, if it's what you want, and you can afford it, just buy it.
Well fellas I am getting underway. I have to cross a state to go get her. But I have talked to the fella and he says she is mine. So lets keep our fingers crossed and hope all goes well.

I made two trips to get mine, three hours each way, Pittsburgh to Columbus. I'm getting a good vibe.
Well fellas I got hosed. Been gone all day and just getting in. And the fella had just recived a sweeter offer on his bike. So after he looked it over he said that it really was about 2 foot shorter than he was wanting. So I got to ride 400 miles for squat. Sorry fellas and thanks for the help.

That's a bummer, but there are more bikes out there. Keep looking, there's always a better deal to be had. Nothing wrong with the early EVO's, I had an '87 myself and it was a great ride. I have to agree that the price was a bit steap, even if it was decked out. Good luck!
