I lubed the speedometer cable this evening. That was one of those little jobs that keep getting pushed down on the list and never done. I had a free half hour this evening, so I did it.
How'd you do that?
On my bike the speedo cable is held onto the sending gear, down on the front axle, by one screw.
  • Remove that screw, pull the cable away from the gear.
  • Reach into the cable outer sheath with a small needle nose pliers and fish the inner cable out. Pull it the rest of the way out, then wipe it down real good (mine was covered with old black yucky very thin grease).
  • Cover the entire length with a thin coat of new grease; I used a packet of the brake caliper grease you can pick up at your local auto parts store. (Leave the top 3" of that cable dry, where it goes up into the speedo; grease up there can migrate up into the speedo, ruining it.)
  • Insert the inner cable back into the sheath, running it all the way up into the speedo. Twist the cable back and forth a little bit when you get to the last 2" to get the square end to go into the speedo.
  • Push the cable back into the gear, install the screw.

Maxpressure520 , you can see the spoons in this pic from when I did the front tire. Front is easier than the rear, but the rear is still easier than opening my wallet. :p
If there is the smallest chance i could ruin the rim or tire i would. Im just gong to pay cycle gear to do it. Maybe one day ill attempt it myself.

I also rode. Same weather. 18 when I got there and 35 for the ride home. Good ride.
Yep. Plenty of good winter riding if you have the right gear. Your in Pennsylvania too, right?

Met up with a group of Chatlotte NC area riders and we rode the Blue Ridge Parkway all day. Wife went with too. Didn’t clock how many miles but we are bushed. Have another group asking if I want to ride with them to Mt. Morrow tomorrow since it’s gone be 78! 😁

Im surprised you still live in the NE if you don’t like winter. There are times it annoys me but most of the time I can find a way to do what I want to comfortably, and I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how.

It was a great day for riding in Ohio! I took a 380 mile ride that included a couple of stops for pictures for a tag game I'm playing on AdvRider. I had a slight mishap at one of the picture stops. The intersection to get back on the main road is on a grade and there's fine gravel everywhere. I saw the gravel, saw there was no traffic coming on the main road, but decided to stop at the stop sign. I put my foot down, slipped, and my bike took a dirt nap. No injury to me, but the bike's right mirror and right valve cover got pretty nicked up.

I should have just kept going up the hill through the intersection. Oh well...

I like winter riding. As long as there's no chance of black ice or downpour on the way TO work, I'll be out there. No heated gear, only heated grips and layer up. I kinda enjoy being the only bike on the road. Have fun, stay alert and ride often. :p

Better a bike dirt nap than becoming a grill ornament the one time you don't stop

Another day of riding with the wife. Beautiful 77 degree weather! Rode out to meet up with a couple more bikes before heading out to lunch and then up to the popular Mt. Morrow in Albemarle NC. Very popular spot with lots of bikes, customized street rods and other stuff. It’s like a Friday night cruise spot but up on top of a mountain.

Agreed. But in this case it probably would have been better for me to just keep going. The intersection gave a clear line of sight in both directions for a few hundred feet. The "main" road is actually a back road with very little traffic. The side road slopes up to the main road and is mostly covered with fine gravel. Even though I could see there was no traffic coming, when I saw that gravel, I hesitated and then had to stop. Foot down, bike down. Had I just kept going with no hesitation and gentle throttle I would have just cruised up onto the main road. I consider it a lesson learned.

At least I was uninjured and the bike received only cosmetic wounds.

The weather see saw continues, Friday mid 40s during the day but I was late going home from work, it was 23F at midnight, a chilly ride home. Saturday was moderating temps, mid 40s, nice. Sunday was pouring in the morning, then it stoppped and the sun came out, and temperatures soared, I had to switch to a lighter riding jacker, it was close to 70F, with piles of snow and ice still in the shady sport..weird! Today I didn't ride, I need the car for something but it was 66F at 0400 on the way to work, then supposed to storm tonight and the temp will drop again.
Crazy weather indeed!

That's a tough call to make in a split second.

Sunday we did something fun, didn't get any pictures but we swapped and I rode Candy's vstrom and she rode my 08 Vision for about 50 miles.
I'm really starting to like that 'strom, especially now that I lowered it an inch and I can get my feet down when I stop! She actually enjoyed riding the Vision, the last time she rode it she hated it, but she figured out that what she hated was the fixed fairing not turning with the bars, it's confusing at first. I struggled at low speeds when I got it too until I recieved these immortal words of wisdom " DON'T LOOK AT THE FREAKING FAIRING" from another Vision rider.
This time, with 15k on the Vstrom with a fixed fairing, it didnlt bother her at all and she enjoyed the ride on some nice NJ side roads ( rt 519)

I wouldn't think that the fixed fairing would bother anyone.
I've been riding with fixed fairings since 1974 when I got the
first Windjammer for my BMW.
Never found it confusing at all.

Okay. These are both picture tag game pictures. The first is at Teagarden Centennial Covered Bridge, the spot with the gravely intersection.

The next one is sorta boring, but I'm including it to help illustrate why I named this bike "Emma Gray".

Soon after I bought her I realized she was continually asking the question, "Am I blue, or am I gray?" ("Emma Blue, or Emma Gray?") So I said, "Emma Gray".
