Was determined to get the wife's Sportster running today. Went out about 9:00 A.M., opened up the shop, darn she sure is dusty, got some tools out and went to work. It has been on a battery maintainer for two days now. I pulled the side cover off, got my meter and checked the battery, 12.40 volts.
I thought, not to bad, maybe it will start. Got on, hit the starter and in about 5 seconds it slowed way down. Checked the battery again right away, 12.07 volts. I'm thinking its time for a new battery. There's a sticker on the inside of the side cover concerning battery removal. This little sticker says to remove the negative cable first. Okay.
Brain fart, I guess. I moved to the other side to remove the other side cover so I can get to the negative cable. Oh, forgot, there's an oil tank there. So after fiddling around some I et the seat off. Well that's no help, can't get to the battery. Well, negative cable is coming off second. Got positive side off and, would one more inch of cable be too much to ask for HD?
Sliding the battery out on the left side, can't get a screwdriver in straight, can't find a 10mm socket but there's no room anyway, and I finally found my 10mm combination wrench, finally. Getting that cable off would have been a lot easier with three hands and a drop light that didn't want to keep rolling over and putting everything in the dark!
Finally it's out. Checking online, everyone has a battery that will fit. Wal-Mart, Autozone, O'Reilly's, NAPA, and Battery Outfitters. I find Battery Outfitters has an AGM battery with enough cca, I think, at a price I can stomach. So run to town and get it, come back home.
Didn't think I would ever get the negative cable attached. Even pulled the battery back out to make sure the screw would go through the hole, and thread onto the nut, it did. Took too long but finally got it. Then the positive side decided to be a pain. I put a small allen wrench behind the nut, so I could get the screw threaded into it. This isn't supposed to be this hard.
Anyway, got the battery installed, finally. Then hooked up the charger to the pig tail. Put side cover and seat back on. Then started dusting it off and got it looking a lot better. I was going to let it sit overnight on charge before starting it, but I just had to try it. Started cranking, full choke on and it popped a couple times then fired up! Oh that sounded good.
Then aired up the saggy tires and put a cover over it. Did I go for a ride? No. I was too hot and sweaty, but I should have rain and colder weather in the forecast now.
