I know i know, theres tons of topics like this on this forum but hey, forums are meant to ask questions. And i definitly looked throughout the sportsbike pages to see if my question was answered and it wasnt. So wit that being said;

Im 18, and im saving up for a new bike that i hope to have by the end of spring/beginning of summer when its nice bike weather. Anyway im 5'10'' 130 pounds, A STICK! but im an athlete, ive been playing sports all my life, so i know im strong even tho im skinny.

anyway my main question is, i was looking through the forums and ive seen ninja 500 being claimed to be the best starter bike, my cousin however told me that Ninjas are heavy and i might not be able to pick it up. i know they're like 380 pounds, right? my question is will i be able to ride a ninja or should i get somethin lighter? is there any sportsbike that is lighter? yamaha, honda, etc..

thanks.

Mine 500 Ninja under 400 pounds. You don't need to pick it up off the ground just get it back upright. It's really not that heavy. About the lightest sportbike I can think of would be a Ninja 250 and still you're well over 325 pound with that.

You will have no trouble uprighting a ninja 500 if you drop it over.

My advice

I'd say given your weight to consider the ninja 250, very similar styling to the 500...

Or (I am taking this route) check out the new 2008 ninja 250 and be amazed :)...

In some pics I swear I cant tell the difference between it and the ZX-10, it just screams modern sports bike...

The fairings headlights etc... are completly different and the two part seat (especially when the optional cowling is on) make it look more super sport and less 80's beginner bike...

I think the pre 08 ninja's are nice looking but just saying, check out the new one... It has grown on me enough to make me want to spend almost double the $$$ for it.

At 16, I was even skinnier, and I rode my Dad's CB450. It ran about 440 lbs. I dumped it in the driveway once and picked it back up with no problems, although fear was a mighty big motivator. :D

You don't have to bench press the bike.. there's a trick to lifting a motorcycle upright from the ground. And with that note, check out Suzuki GS500F.. I'm biased because I just bought one, but it's such a great bike.. :D

i think GS500s are more $ than the ninja 500 right? i would love a suzuki but finding a cheap good used GS500 is tougher than finding a ninja 500. i know i dont need to bench press it , i was jus wondering if i dropped it, if i was gona be able to lift it back upright.

New they are the same money, that I do know.

I'm biased towards the Ninja 500. I felt I got more like a liquid cooled engine and a bit more power. I liked the looks of the Ninja more than the GS but that's just me. Actually I liked either one but the Kawasaki dealer was willing to deal and had one in something other than the blue color scheme. I looked at several used and 1 new GS the day I bought my Ninja and they were all blue and white.

It's great to see that not all new riders are shooting for 1000s!!! You're smart for considering this, however I have to agree with those who said that it shouldn't be a terrible problem. Consider that many women have their bikes lowered (which does lower the center of gravity, but doesn't change the weight of the bike) so that they can ride them. I've seen that on bikes all the way up to Hayabusas. As far as a bike to learn on, the EX250, EX500, SV650 are a few great ones off the top of my head.
