Well, there's more than one way to skin a cat. Run a wire directly to the battery. Right next to the battery, add a in-line fuse. Then, somewhere easy for you to reach, and best if kept mostly out of sight, add a toggle switch. If there's a short, the in-line fuse will blow preventing any damage.
When you get on, reach down and flip the toggle switch, crank the engine and go. It's not the way the factory designed it to work but it will work and get you back on the road.
