I've been curious about these types of engines... I read somewhere that it's for the nuttier bike enthusiasts out there, that it's not for everybody... etc.
I could read up wiki articles, or I could ask my forum buds so..
If anyone has a two-stroke engine I'd like to hear from you
(or post the link if there's pre-existing threads)
2 stokes are nice because they give you way more power per cc than a 4 stroke. The bad is of course the environmental issues and since it is older tech, you will have trouble finding people who can work on it, not to mention parts. Ride wise they are a lot of fun. A buddy of mine has a Yamaha 350 2 stroke that he has turned into a cafe racer. It is very fast, but the power is not very linear. It comes on all at once in the upper rpms. Can be quite a surprise if you are not used to it.
I grew up on yamaha two stroke.....awesome power....
However, most misunderstand them.....ign. timing is critical for long life....and of course oil mix properly.....I had the DT175/DT250 enduro,R5C 350(RD'S came later)RD 200 street,
The secret was in the reed valve set up/design....
4 stroke last longer because they don't run/operate as hot......rrdrstv
Here is a good article on 2-stroke vs 4-stroke and there are links within the article that are more in-depth explanations.
