Thread repair in case

Trying to fiind out where threads end up in a 06 Yamaha Wr250f oil filter cover. The bottom bolt that's a allen head that holds cover on needs to be tapped out. Stuck a toothpick in to see and it leads to a passageway. Wondering if anyone knows where it goes so if I got any filings in there from tap it wouldn't eat my motor? Thoughts?

I've heard some mechanics will re-tap a hole with grease to contain the chips. I wouldn't trust that, I'd take it to a mechanic to split the cases and do the job right. if you can, removing the engine and take it to the mechanic will lower the cost. Remember, tapping the hole wrong could and very likely will damage your engine, quite possibly junk it.

According to the service manual ( page 2-19 Lubrication Diagrams ) the lower bolt opens to a channel that seems to connect to the oil filter chamber .
Owner's Servive Manual :

You might try removing the filter and locating that channel . Then try inserting a q tip or pipe cleaner to find it's bottom .
If that proves 'good' . Maybe wet the q tip or pipe cleaner with oil to catch any flakes and insert it in the channel before attempting a re-thread with the appropriate thread insert . Maybe a simple heli coil would be plenty for that application .
Let us know how it goes . ;)
  • Stuff rags up that hole and channel so it's completely blocked.
  • Leave only enough room on inside for tip of tap to reach through.
  • Yes, tap with grease to catch chips and prevent them from flying too far away.
  • After tapping, carefully pull out rags to draw out any chips on them.
  • Rinse oil-pan by pouring couple quarts of lightweight oil into fill-hole and letting it run out freshly tapped drain hole.
  • After not seeing any chips flow out with oil, it should be clean.
