what i have to do to get started, what kind of tests i have to take, how long it will take, what i have to do/have. everything

it would be easier to understand from someone who has already done it, so i would like your explanation. thanks

Well I haven't done it in CA but I did it in Oklahoma.

Basically we hed 2 parts, a written and driving portion. The written was actually a test and it was very much like the test to get a normal drivers license. The driving?? I dunno. I took the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Beginner's Riding Course and when you complete that, they waive the driving portion of the test. Not only that, I learned a whole lot about riding from that course so it was well worth the money IMO.

I would suggest you call your local licensing place. In OK it's the OK Highway Patrol and they can give you info for your specific state. I would bet money that have this info online. perhaps google for it??
I did the same as jethrol, take the course it helps so much in learning and then you do get the waiver. But which ever way you go after you pass the written and street course you would take the info back to DMV and just tell them you need to get your license. Make sure you go to the dmv you got your permit at.
In NY, there's a written test which is a joke and a driving test. Usually a few left and right turns and some figure 8. Should be a push over...
They should make you parallel park. lol
in GA if you take the msf course they wave both written and driving coarses

Start by getting a learner's permit: Written test, eye test, etc. at CA DMV. If you have a Class C (automobile) license and it's been over a year since you renewed it, you will have to renew that too (another written test).

If under 21 you will have to take and pass the MSF class .. which is really the easiest way to pass the riding test, anyway, and well worthwhile; MSF class is four half day sessions (classroom-range-classroom-range). Over 21 you can take the riding test at the DMV, which I'm told is harder than taking MSF class (which I did, not having ever ridden a cycle). Passing the MSF class gets you a certificate. Take that and your learner's permit to DMV and you will get the M1 license. If you pass the MSF class first, before getting a permit, you still have to take the written test at the DMV (but it should then be easy).

My wife and I did it the MSF route and it is really a worthwhile experience. Will make you a safer rider and maybe save your life.

Phil
