The great gas debacle

So, I often stop to gas up my bike at the Quick Check station on
the center island of route 15 near me.
Most of the people there are nice, and some of them
are VERY nice, but there is one skinny-faced
kid there with a bad attitude. No "Hello" or "How's it going".
First words out of his mouth the last few times I was there
were "Stop it at the nearest dollar", said with bad attitude.
Well, tonight I'd had it. I said to him, "The bike has a small
tank as it is. Do you REALLY think I'm leaving here with less
than a full tank?". He made some snide remark and I said I'd
take it up with management inside. He said "You do that".
So I went inside and spoke to the woman manager. She
apologized and told me to get as much as I wanted any time
I was there. When I last saw her, she was headed for the gas
pumps and the skinny-faced kid. He obviously doesn't like his
job. Maybe she relieved him of that job after I left.
I can only hope.

P.S. I can only imagine how pissed he'd be if I came in
there with my Honda 90 which only holds a little over
a gallon of gas!
LOL!!

Personally I hope he does get fired, OC. Some people need a hard 'slap up the side of the head' to learn how to get along with people and some basic manners. We all have a bad attitude every now and then, but most of us keep it hidden in public.

The worst one I ever encountered was years ago with my brand new GL 1000. My partner and I stopped for gas somewhere in Yellowstone. As I started to fill my tank the attendant (a kid) came running out, grabbed the nozzle out of my hand, and told me to stand BEHIND the building while he filled my tank. I really thought about giving him a life lesson, but I checked up, paid the 50 cents I had put in my tank, and moved on.
What kind of gas station is that? I'm from Long Island NY and I don't travel around much. I've never been told to "stop at the nearest dollar". In fact, I haven't even had to speak to an employee at a gas station to get gas for over 10 years. Does that gas station have a severe limit on gas or was the kid just being a dick?
Sounds like the kid has trouble with math. Yeah, everything is done for him except for actually counting out your change. My God, what's he supposed to do if you give him $15 and all you got was $10.34 in gas? All those dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies, it can get confusing!

Yes, the kid was being a dick.
Quick Check is a New Jersey based company that started with convenience stores years ago. Lately they've expanded into gas stations.
You haven't spoken to a gas station attendant because there are none in most of the US anymore. Only New Jersey and Oregon still require attendants.
The rest of the US is self service.

I'm guessing unemployment might be low in your area or they wouldn't have to put up with such as that.
Good help is hard to find you know.
That's one strange story anyway you look at it. Too lazy to make change? Never learned how to count? Doesn't like motorcycle riders? All of the above?

Reminds me of stopping for gas in a small Texas town called Dumas. Or as I've renamed it... Dumbazz.
I'd been on the road for three weeks, tired, hot, sore and ready for my own bed.
As I filled the tank I felt something warm in/on the wrist area of my only white long sleeve tee shirt. It was gasoline leaking from a hose at the nozzle.

I went in asking for a place to wash the gas off and told the attendant girl she needed to bag the leaking nozzle.

"I'm sorry sir, we are not allowed to do that." Said with an attitude.

Well give me a bag and I'll bag it then.

"I'm sorry sir I can't let you do that." Worse tude.

By then I'd had it!

You're going to get somebody blown up out there with that leaking gas and you'll get your pants sued right off of you because you've been told and yet you refuse to do anything about it!

"I've told my boss but he won't let me do anything with that pump" Still a big shot, less tude now though.

I went to wash off the gas as best I could.
When I came out she was on the phone telling someone "he said I said that but I never said anything like that". (Working her CYA lie).

I briefly explained the dangers of gasoline to the ENTIRE STORE and went on my.
That store was closed the last time I went thru Dumbazz....

The last time I was in New Jersey I think I gave the gas station attendant a minor heart attack. The station was pretty busy, and I forgot about the stupid law that says the attendant has to work the pump. I pulled up, put the hose in the tank of my SUV and started pumping the gas. I was just finishing when this guy runs over, literally screaming for me to STOP!. I topped off the tank, put the hose back in the pump and asked him if I needed to pay him or pay inside. He was actually purple with anger that I had filled up by myself. What a stupid state with stupid laws. When I add this experience to my knowledge of their draconian anti-gun laws, it only reinforces my impression that when I cross the Pennsylvania and New Jersey state line I am leaving the United States and entering a hostile and very foreign country.

Luckily, most gas attendants realize that bikers won't let them touch their bikes.
So they start the pump, then hand you the nozzle to fill the bike.
Every time I take a trip somewhere, when I return home I always say, "The biggest
mistake I always make is coming back to New Jersey."

Whenever I pay cash, I do the math and know how much change I should get. If I think there is an error, I leave the change out, and ask the cashier to recalculate.

Job opening at the gas station on my Island. Was chatting with Laurel yesterday. She works there. Says it is proving hard to get anyone who can handle $$, and show up for work on time. Young and old have failed.

I don't know if the old have failed, UK. I'd be more than willing to work If I didn't have to stand up all day and could take my usual three naps during my shift.
Customer service should always be #1. I was taught that at my first job and it still holds true to me today. Unfortunately it isn't practiced as much as it should be these days...

I know this quick check and had one issue there my self. When I was going to the friends forever ride at the minors stadium some guy was taking for ever inside the attention just wanted for him to come out I was there for 3 minutes before he came to me then when the drive finally comes out he leaves me to go to him. Then I am told well he was her first. I told the guy he don’t know how to do his job and went to Exxon across the street never have issues there. If I need to get gas on that side I do. But even if it’s a few cents over a dollar o tell them road up to the next dollar

My funniest memory was when my wife and I were riding our CB750 through the Colorado mountains on our way home from CA to Mo and back home to sunny California. I had about maybe a gallon or less left in my 5 gallon tank and when I pulled up to the pumps I spied a little hand written sign that informed "MOTORCYCLE riders," that Minimum sales were for 5 gallons or more and if less was pumped, the person would still be charged for 5 gallons:sad:

I sauntered over to the small office and sitting in front was about 4 old FARTS and I asked if that sign was a joke and was informed in a manner that should have got his lights punched out that "We are tired of bikes pulling in here and just pumping a few gallons!" :plain:

I reminded him that on motorcycles that don't hold much fuel anyway, a few gallons can mean being okay or running out!

I looked at my map and found the next little town about 20 miles away and so I just turned around, got on the bike and rode away.

Truth: There were to many old BUTT HOLES there as witnesses or the outcome may have been much worse for 'old Grumpy.'

Sam:nerd:
