Hey, I was hoping someone would be able to help shed some light on how to get a sprocket cover off of a '74 GT550. All the bolts are out but it seems to be getting hung up on the gear shift shaft. The shaft rotates so it's not rusted on. Is there maybe a grommet of sorts that keeps it from easily coming off? Some help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Other than the shaft, there should also be a dowel pin to keep things aligned. At least on most bikes there is. Get a rubber mallet and start tapping. And tap. And tap. And tap. Drink a beer, and tap. What I used to do on my old 70's 750, is gently, very gently, insert a thin bladed screw driver between the cover and the case, and tap. It will come off, it just takes time. DON'T force it!
