Stoplight Safety: Neutral or First?

Stoplight Safety: First Gear or Neutral?

I've read in training manuals that it is a good idea to shift the motorcyle into first gear at a stoplight so that if an emergency were to occure you would be able to hit the throttle and move out of the way.

I've read in these forums about people who have had the clutch cable suddenly snap while sitting at a light in gear and the bike jerked unexpectedly creating a risky situation.

I have been shifting into first gear at stop lights, but I see most people shift into neutral, and then get into gear when the light goes green.

Which is more safe?

If I know it's a longer light I'll throw it in neutral and stretch out to wait for it. Either way though.
I have been putting it into neutral alot more recently...
i'm not sure yet what my preference will be, but i believe the safe option is 1st correct?? allows for quick acceleration in emergency situations..
neutral for me
I always put it in neutral...think its a truck thing. Driving big trucks and and tractor trailer trucks you always put into neutral to let the clutch out so you don't wear out the throughout bearing. But I am always aware of the car behind me and try to go slow enuff to not have to stop.
I normally stop pointing out of traffic. If I am about to be crunched I can pull straight out of traffic. And if I don't move on my own the following car will hopefully push me out rather than make me the filling in a car sandwich. I also keep it in first unless; a) the car behind has stopped and b) is a long wait. I do this for two reasons. The first being I can get out of the way of the rear car quicker and the second being that when I take off I like to put a little back brake pressure on the rear wheel as I start to move which allows me to lift my feel while still stopped and move out smoothly.
I always keep it in 1st gear leaving enough room between me and the vehicle ahead of me in case I have to make a quick maneuver....
If I have to stop, I always leave it in gear and angle the bike towards an escape route incase the widget behind decides to want to hit you. Or the one behind him/her.
Be safe out there!!!

So true!!!

Just wrote a new thread about safety, first gear, to get away.
I almost got killed on Saturday from a driver behind me!
Once I get a car or 2 stopped behind me I might throw it in neutral. But as far as safety goes you should never be in neutral
tl;dr

I always keep it in first gear unless I know for a fact that I will be sitting there for a good long while, and there isn't a threat of being hit from behind.
Another vote for first... I honestly hadn't even thought about what it might be doing to the clutch. I just like the idea of being able to take off quickly and easily if need be.
As far as Im concerned Neutral doesnt exist. My bike stays in gear all the time while Im on it.

And really...the only time its in neutral is when Im working on it.
Your position on a motorcycle, especially on a close spot. (Cars around you), should be as stable as Possible. Standing with a gear in, is not stable. Proof you cannot hold that status for longer time. -Your hands will cramp.
Reason to react in Emergence? - does not work, think about it twice.
If that would be true, do the extrem simulation. To be even more effective in an emergence, keep the engine at 4500 rpm to even quicker. Sounds like nonense? It is nonsense, but that is the point.
There is no reason to torture yourself and keep the bike in first gear.
I am from europe and never haerd such thing in my life before i came here.
There is no "depends".

Safety, and advanced rider techniques dictate 1st gear, right foot on brake, left foot down.

If you disagree, go take an advanced rider course.
Depends on if you are stopped going up hill or down hill as to which brake you hold, if you hold one at all.

Thanks, i cannot argue with personal attacks. But i am glad not hearing anything that would proof me wrong.
If there's NO risk to my bike, I keep it in neutral at the stoplight. Then I kick it into first when the light is going to change. But if there's any risk at all, I will stay in first gear.

WHERE are you gonna go? If you don't have a GREEN light, then you are gonna make a hard right TURN and go down the street that crosses in front of you. And you will do this while accelerating. Good times! :)

I'd go where ever i think i need to go come the circumstances at the time....
