I got an '81 Yamaha sr250. Stator went out and I just replaced it. Now when I try to start it the plug will spark once and nothing until I shut it off then it will spark again. I know this because I hooked up my timing light to see if it was sparking. Voltage regulator?

In my opinion you should not deal with the regulator/rectifier module. First of all you should know if you ignition unit is CDI, powered from a separate coil(s) in the stator (one or two differnt coils can be easily seen) or TCI. Second you should check when the spark appears, either when you turn ON or when you turn OFF the ignition switch. If there is a CDI unit instaled on your motorcycle and the spark appears when you turn OFF the ignition key, 99% it means you have a problem with the pickup sensor. Its resistance is easily checked, but its peak voltage, which is more important, is not.
I hope this information is helpful.
