Hello,

I am working on a personal project trying to build a digital motorcycle speedometer and am reaching out to various repair shops in the area hoping to get a few of my questions answered. I appreciate any help and thanks for you time!

  1. Do most or all modern bikes directly feed the instrument display (speedometer, tachometer, current gear, etc.) from the CAN bus?
  2. If so, I am assuming each bike manufacture has its own proprietary CAN messages for the instrument display?
  3. I have heard that most bikes have OBD with either standard OBD plugs or a custom plugs and that only Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Royal Infield use proprietary non-OBD interfaces for diagnostics? If this is true, why are there no “universal speedometers” that connect to OBD ports for motorcycles?
Thanks!
