Slight wobble at high speed

984 Views 50 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Unkle Krusty
I have a 2008 Royal Star Venture, I got it last year , late in the season.
Around town I haven't seen any issue, but today I took it 1.5 hours away.
This was the first time I tested cruise and high speed riding, 85 MPH interstate.
I let off the steering for a moment to adjust a glove and realized that is started to slightly wobble.
Nothing serious, but was disconcernting. Especially at that speed. So When getting off the interstate I tried again at 65 MPH
Same thing happened.
So now I am trying to figure out why.

I dont know how old the tires are, they are in good condition. Previous owner may have a log .
Tire pressure?
There is a date code on the tire that says how old they are. Wheel out of balance, neck bearings worn or loose ?

headset bearings
wheel bearings
fork-seals and bushings
fork tubes alignment
both wheels balanced
front/rear wheel alignment

I had front-end shimmy that was annoying me. Replaced everything in front-end except for wheel and fork tubes (all new innards).
Finally followed Dave's procedure in this video and it fixed it! Never figured out what was wrong exactly.

When I had a wobble it was a bad front wheel bearing, it drove me nuts till I found it.

My Goldwing wobbled from the day my buddy bought it brand new.
He always put Dunflop tires on it.
I changed to a Michelin Commander II front tire.
Wobble gone.
Can different front shock pressure cause it?
Can different front shock pressure cause it?
Probably not but, anything is possible.
I'd be looking for an out-of-round or out-of-balance front tire, odd wear (cupping) of the front tire and as mentioned bad bearings in wheel or steering neck.

I looked through logs, there is nothing about tires. But they seem in good condition.
Will look at them more tommorow when I have more time. Tread is good , dunlop brand.
Tires can look good, but have a problem.
I had a continuous bouncing of my from wheel at about 65. Tried a few different ways of balancing it. Did not work. A new tire fixed the problem. I also had a steering direction problem, mostly on the freeway. New steering head bearings fixed that problem. Best to check everything as suggested in the posts above.

That bike has individual schrader valves on each side making each tubes air pressure independent. The recommended range is between 0 and 7 lbs. I would get one of these pumps to control the pressures. Also you have another valve on the back right by the front of the hardbag. That one controls the rear air pressure. Off the top of my head the range is 0 to 45lbs.

this is an example from amazon that will work: Low pressure air pump

I inspected the front tire, and noticed a small cut on the side wall. Where the tread meets the sidewall. The tread is good. But could this be the issue?
I have a pressure pump now just never adjusted them yet.
A small cut is not likely the cause you describe but mismatched air pressure sure will.
Please check the date code on those tires. Old tires can look okay on the outside but have damage inside where you can't see. Especially if a previous owner rode it under inflated.

It could, depending... A cut in the sidewall might be a clue that there is more damage you can not see from the outside.
First thing to do is replace the tire. Then see what you've got. You know the tire is bad, it's cut.

The tire would be my first stop. Head bearings, and wheel bearings. Next. Sort the forks, they should be the same.

If you have dual front disc brakes a dragging caliper on one side can sometimes cause a pulsing Sensation that feels like a wobble.
