Reasonable price for a 2019 CBR300?

Hi all -

I came across a 2019 Honda CBR300R with ABS at a dealership and would like to get thoughts on whether it’s a reasonable price. I understand this is subjective but would appreciate any insights from experienced riders.

Here are the specs:
  • 1,700 miles. I think it sat in a garage for a few years.
  • Traded in to a dealership by the first and only owner. A few scratches but nothing too bad.
  • Dealership gave the bike an oil and oil filter change, a new oil drain plug gasket, and the new exhaust (aftermarket). I asked for the stock exhaust but the previous owner lost it.
  • Estimate price: $5,600 (MSRP+tax+licensing/registration+delivery).
For a simple machine already 4 years old, the price seems a bit steep. I also am not crazy about the exhaust but the dealership put it on and was resistant to swapping it out for an OEM part.

In addition to whether this is a “reasonable” price, are there ways I can negotiate the price down and are any other questions I should be asking the dealership? Example: They told me they “every bike is looked over thoroughly for any obvious points of concern” but should I also be asking for an inspection report?

thanks!

I'd say that's about $1500-2000 too high due to bodywork damage and non-factory exhaust.

1. Here's 2018 with 800-miles and NO bodywork damage and factory exhaust for $4000

2. Here's 2019 with 6600-miles with NO bodywork damage, factory exhaust and brand-new tyres for $4500

3. Here's 2021 with 250-miles with NO bodywork damage and factory exhaust for $5000

Bodywork is HUGE deal. Insurance companies will total a bike dropped in parking lot based on bodywork alone! Get estimate from different dealer on what it costs to replace bodywork that's damaged on bike you're looking at. Also cost of factory exhaust. Approach your dealer with these figures and tell them you wanted it discounted by that much because you'd take it to other dealer to have those items repaired.. Or they can replace bodywork and exhaust and you'd buy it for $5600.

Also tire age is concern and you don't want tyres any older than 5-yrs old. So bring that up with them as well. Gives you an item you can concede in negotiations.

And request warranty and 1st year service thrown in. If you're going to be paying brand-new price for bike, you should get brand-new bike warrantee and service.

You'll want to take it elsewhere for pre-purchase inspection. Most independent mechanics will charge $100-150. Well worth it for peace of mind.

Yeah, way too high. You can get bike in way better condition for less money for sure. Don't fall for any single bike, there's plenty to choose from. Walking away is best negotiating tactic you can do.

Given the body damage, plus the fact I doubt the dealer gave more than $1500 trade-in, plus the fact that by the time you are out the door it'll be approaching the msrp of a new one, I'd say -- too high.

This! I haven't bought/sold a ton of bikes but every single time I brushed off my own concerns because of a "gotta get this one!" mentality, it's come back to bite me in the... butt.

Thanks for the responses! I’m trying to not let my eagerness for my first bike result in me overpaying substantially. I’ve been looking for the last year and haven’t found anything yet. I’ll see if they can negotiate, if not then on to the next one.

What money are you talking about? Is that CDN, US, AUSTRALIAN, etc?

USD.
It helps when we know what country you are in.

That price is way too high even for Canada. It's worse being in USD. I find many dealers in Canada are competitive on used bikes, especially in Quebec and western Ontario but many are not and some are outrageous. It is almost always better to buy from a previous owner as long as you know how to weed out the bad ones.

I’m in the US, specifically NY. Given how many bikes are here I didn’t think it would be so difficult to find an affordable bike but that could also be bc it’s my first one!

Are you only shopping dealers? If you know a bit about bikes (or can take someone with you who does), then you are likely to find better deals on CraigsList, Facebook, or CycleTrader...

Hi all - just wanted to give an update: they were a no go with negotiations. They said the bike is perfect and refused to change the exhaust. I’m a bit bummed that I have continue to wait especially since the riding season is here, but I’d rather save on my first bike to invest in quality gear. I’m now looking exclusively at CycleTrader, FB marketplace, and Craigslist. Thanks for all your help, and if you have any tips for a newbie, I’m all ears!

I would try to stay with something in the years 2000 and up unless you were looking at something that has been around for a long time with little changes. An older bike with low mileage is usually a good deal if the seller is at all reasonable. If you are interested in a certain bike, take a look around at other ads and google to see what it has been selling for and negotiate based on that. I would also go no larger than 500cc for your first bike.
