I like seeing some of those old time photos.
But they must have had a law back then that made it illegal to smile for a photograph.
Most of the people in the old pics have stone-faced scowl on their puss.

I've often wondered about that myself:surprise:

A lot of Men don't smile when a picture is taken because they want to look tough. The jokes on them:wink2:

I think back in the day the exposure times were really long, so it would hurt to smile long enough for the picture to come out.

At least, that's what I have been told.

Maybe they just didn't want posterity to think they were bobble-heads. I mean, who would want to go down in history like the vapid twit in this picture?

Some people that look like they are not smiling are smiling on the inside but they just don't show it well. I'm one of them. I can nearly be rolling on the floor laughing and it just doesn't show on my face. People say "SMILE" and I say "I AM". Unfortunately my mouth naturally turns down making me look glum. So if my mouth is straight like this, lain:, I'm smiling.:angel: But I will admit a picture with all of them looking glum is questionable. To suggestion holding a smile long enough or they can't do it that long is questionable too though. Isn't it a fact that it takes fewer muscles to smile than it does to frown? Thought I read that ???SOMEWHERE???

They are just practicing the bad-ass biker "perma-scowl" I see so much of on the road. Too busy posing and looking "tough" to actually enjoy the ride.

I've heard much the same thing about smiling in photos as BWB75. Also, I've heard that since photographs were a bit of a rarity, that it was a much more formal thing.

Just to be completely clear, that vapid twit was me.

So True BWB75, I saw it on the 'Flintstones,' the bird stuck its head out the hole to take a look at the object, then with its beak, chiseled a picture into a flat piece of stone. Technology, I love it!

The thing about not moving for a photograph dates back to, like the Civil War and the 1800's. I think they had glass plates coated with chemicals and it took a long time to expose the "film?" By the early 20th century cameras were capable of taking "instant" pictures. At least as early as WWI such cameras existed, but I don't know the exact date they were first available.

As for posing, if you could actually ride one of those old machines you had no need to pose or posture: you were THE definition of badass!
