One- or two-piece tank protector?

648 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  hogcowboy
All my squirming on my bike in the twisties has worn a spot through the paint on my tank. I'd like to get a tank protector, but the worn spot is in kind of a weird place to make sure the protector would cover it so I'm trying to decide if I would have better luck with a one- or two-piece protector.

Seems that you like right hand corners more....I'd go for a two piece tank protector because of the different curves on the tank. One piece ones are less malleable and can tend to lift at the edges on very curved sections.

My Aprilia has a similarly shaped tank.

I would go for a multi piece type if you can find a good one. I bought three that two of them the glue came loose and they moved. I ended up using bed liner paint and a tank protector for this reason.

Although there should be two marks, I wouldn’t worry about it but wear it with pride that you use your bike, similar to chicken strips discussed in another thread.

I would avoid the universal fit and go for a quality set specifically cut for your Ninja 400. There are some 3M products that you can cut and apply if you are handy. I've had one and two piece and they have all been good. By the way, I think the mark adds character!

I actually like to say that I was leaning so hard that I was scraping hard parts!!:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: My only real concern is rust. Will it if I don't treat it somehow? I figure touchup paint will end up doing the same thing eventually.

I use a soft, fuzzy piece of cloth fabric to protect the tank when I need to use a tank bag, the only tank protector I use on my bikes.
I'm thinking a little wax on the affected area should hold off rust well enough for the realistic life of the machine... IMO.

As clean as your bike is I suspect you also wax it. That should protect against any rust plus, as long as you keep riding like that you'll keep any potential rust at bay anyway.
