I think you can give it to the DMV or Police station and they will return it.

An interesting related story. The plate on my Jeep went missing. I called my local PD to report it. Lucky I did. A couple months later my plate was found in a gravel quarry that was severely vandalized by some people. They ruined the truck scales, buildings, and excavating equipment. It's a small town here, and the cops know me enough to know I'm not a person to do that. Coupled with the fact I reported my plate missing months before, I was safe.

interesting thing about all this is....

I myself had lost my license plate that day. I velcro it and must not have attached it properly.

so here I am creeping up First avenue and holding up traffic and run into the first plate--not mine--pick it up (not sure what I had planned on doing with it at the time) and then a few blocks later, find mine.

Then I thought... if I were the other guy, I'd be grateful if someone posted a lost'n'found ad.

gonna go riding it's nice weather here in nyc, might drop it off at the precinct I guess.
