Today in a local gear shop, I saw a
novelty helmet in the shape of a civil
war forage cap. It actually looked
pretty good.

I'm wondering why it couldn't be made
to DOT standards. There are plenty
of half helmets of similar size that are
DOT.

For that matter, why aren't there other
styles of helmets as well? I'd personally
go for a helmet that resembled an
Indiana Jones hat. I might even like
one like a Sherlock Holmes hat, or a
leather bomber hat, or a russian fur
hat. All could work as a half or 3/4
helmet.

It seems like we currently can only chose
from power ranger, penis head, or
skid lid for the basic style. Even the
highway crew can get cowboy hard hats
now. There should certainly be enough
of us to make a market for more styles.

Someone should design different fabric pullovers that can be velcroed or otherwise to the helmet. Then you could get a skid lid and change the style.

Form impacts function. It's difficult and more expensive to build the tooling for unusual shapes that would also need to tested, and proven to be as effective as standard shapes.
EG: if a helmet with some sort of brim is impacted on one of it's irregularities, it still must not fail, or cause a failure elsewhere in the standard tests.
That's alot of engineering for something they may view as having a very limited demand.

Someone in California beat a citation for lack of a helmet when he was wearing a baseball cap.
It seems at the time the laws were ambiguous enough to allow any head covering to be considered a helmet.

Guess how long until they changed the wording of the law?

or a russian fur
hat.
The russian fur hat would make a pimpin helmet LOL

I doubt I would want to crash in a helmet shaped like a cowboy hat. Imagine the strain that would cause on your neck, the brim hitting the pavment and you neck taking the rest of the impact.

2 weeks, if thats wrong I bet it was about 1/10 of the time it would normally take them to address a situation.

I'd be willing to bet the polycarbonate
brim of a cowboy shaped had would
bend or crack before sending as much
force as the chin of a full face helmet.

As for tooling, different molds are made
for each of the many shapes we have
now. And of course, each helmet style
we have now must be tested.

It's mostly that the manufacturers have
no imagination. They need to hire some
fashion designers to give them some
ideas.

I'm already getting some leather to
make a more stylish skin for my current
helmet. I'm not sure where it will go
yet. Possibly a kind of patchwork, or
maybe more like a biplane pilot's hat
style. Possibly fur around the collar,
but probably not.

I got a german styled helmet thats DOT, there are a few, you can get fighter-plane style helmets with vizors, german helmets, I did have a 2 3/4 inch spike superglued on the top, but that seems to break off everytime I foget and put the helmet down upside down.

Actually, they might be DOT Approved, but they didn't send them to do all the testing, so we won't know about that ... but if you were saying
Indiana Jones hat, Sherlock Holmes hat, or a leather bomber hat, or a russian fur hat. Then I think it have something to do with the physic behide it... I am not sure if wind resistance count in helmet, but I know shock absorbion is gonna be the main concern...

I am sure it's possible to make those hat though, but it might not look as good as the real head, after all, they are gonna look much thicker... you know, just put a helmet under the Indianna Jones hat... um.. that would work, but really, it could becomes one much bigger hat :D

um... if enough people want it, I could actually go and check out some factory and see if they can make them  but then again, from The size of most DOT approve hat, I would think it wouldn't look as cool... imagine putting an extra protection layer under the Indiana Jones Hat, or the Russian Fur Hat
