New Rider Need Help Choosing a Ride!!!

Hi guys. I have a very complicated question. I am going to be a new rider, I don't even have a bike yet. The bike will be used mostly for weekend riding and fun not as a primary source of transportation. I live in Phoenix, AZ and ideally I would use it to go to Tucson, Sadona and other weekend getaways. I will also use it occasionally for fun around the city but DEFINITELY not in rush hour.

I am 24, I will be waiting until I turn 25 to get the bike for insurance reasons, I am 6' 190 lbs and I would consider myself pretty strong since I work out quite a bit.

What kind of bike would you guys suggest and why? I know I don't want anything too powerful but at the same time I don't want something that I will outgrow in a year.

I have been told to look at the 07 Ducati 695 Monster because it is suppose to handle well, have enough power, and something about the way it shifts. The guys have also told me that starting in 07 the maintenance cost on those bikes drops by 50% or so because of the new way they are designing their engines or something.

Thanks for all of your advice!

Go to the bike show taking place right now at the Cardinals stadium. You don't want to miss it; trust me.
Kinda hard to answer this since you have not told us anything about what type of bikes you like. But if the Ducati is not your thing then maybe you should check out the V-star or Shadow line of bikes in the 650 to 750 range. Nice cruisers with power to stay with the bigger cruisers.

I like the sprots bikes... I REALLY like the Ducati 695 Monster the naked bike. Other then that I do like the look of the CBR and the Kawasaki Ninja bikes. So far the Ducati is my favorit bike that I have seen. I just don't know what the difference is between all of the bikes and what is the positive and negative of the different makes. Or are they all just like a car, (no difference in how the ride feel is and the service cost is between a Ford Focus and a Chevy Cobalt) type thing.
The most important thing you should do is sit on the bikes that you are interested in to be sure it is the comfort and body position you want.

The 695 Monster is a more upright seating position than other sportbikes with a slight more forward mid bike foot position.

With no fairing, the Monster seems more like a sportbike/cruiser rather than a full blown sportbike, but it does look like it would handle very well.

You may also want to look at Triumph's Speed Triple or Street Triple. Styling like the Monster, but with less maintenance.

So are the maintanence cost on some brands of bikes much higher then the others? How often do i need to maintain them and what is the average cost? I know on cars the major maintanence is on 30k and 60k miles.

Check out the Ducati boards, but I'm thinking the valve adjustment intervals were just increased to 7,500 miles. It was 15K on my Yamaha. Chain lube and adjusting are about every 3-400 miles, but that's a do-it-yourselfer.

Watch for dealer's open house events. Most offer test rides. You can sample several brands by the time you are ready to buy.
