to continue on NoRegrets' story, in my MSF class, there was this older gentleman. Probably about mid-60 to 70 years old. When getting into the emergency swerving, weaving, and "highway ramp" (mainly the end of 1st day of riding and all of 2nd day of riding), the guy seemed way disoriented. The instructor would tell him to go one way, and he'd end up completely out of the drill. There were about 2 or 3 times total where the instructor had to direct him over to the pit, have him turn off his bike engine, and gave him a "review" of what the class was doing.

There were a few times when he was driving into the pit behind some other classmates, and he didn't seem to be able to stop the bike correctly, so he seemed to give up on braking, and continued to ride in between the staggered pit lineup. The instructor seemed a little peeved, but seemed to let it go.

The scary thing... the guy passed.

I'm sorry but letting someone that can't manage the bike in the class pass, is signing his death warrant.
I think what happened was that he seemed to "fumble" around in the drills, but when the final exam came along, he did pretty decent, IIRC. He didn't drop the bike or crash into any cones or other students. He may have been docked off for going too slow or what not, but with a 20pt leeway, he may have slipped under.

I personally lost 10pts, 5 for going out of the lines on the figure-8 exam and 5 for going too slow on the "highway ramp" entrance and exit. But I'm 220# on a 200cc for goodness sakes!!! :D

17 out of 20 points :)

I think alot of people who pass never end up following through anyways, I bet a large portion poo their pants and never go on to get a license or bike. I'm sure at the end of the course they also explained that "just because you passed doesn't mean you're ready to go riding on the street" and so on.

Took the class about a year ago now. Just the other day I was in a big empty (no more mervyn's) parking lot and went through all the drills. Got some funny looks from the folks at the nearby restaruant, but I had fun with it. Just cause the class is over, don't give up on practicing the drills when you get a chance.

I took my class about a month ago, got my first bike yesterday, first thing I did was take it to the highschool parking lot and run through the drills I learned in my MSF class!

Great class, learned a lot and I too am amazed at those who get a bike and just start riding! I talked a friend who was going to do that into taking the class with me, you know, support group kind of thing....he changed his tune about just jumping on a bike and going!

We lost one chick in the class, she just froze and finally quit...she dropped the bike twice. Then a couple of smart @$$ know it all's laid they bikes down, too. You could see their attitudes change...

So far I'm extrememly happy that my husband talked me into at least considering riding, but it is costing him dearly ;) New used bike, helmet, clothes, etc, etc....

Yeah, I think my GF is more excited about shopping for MC gear that's "cute" than getting a bike.

MSF courses are worth their weight in gold, as you know!

Regarding slowing down/speeding up in the exam...they'll tell you to slow down like in the box maneuver, because the faster you go the wider you turn, which will make you go outside the box! But there are a couple of maneuvers where you are supposed to be going at least 15 mph (I think that was the speed) through the curve, and if you're going too slow they dock you points. It all depends on what you're supposed to be doing.

I keep telling my husband his hobby of riding is way cheaper than my hobby of training and competing with retrievers! I will have to admit though, the clothes/gear is a lot more "cute" than what we use in field trials! HA

Now if I can only figure out how to show up at a FT on a bike with dogs in tow!
