First of all everyone for the help and encouragement.

I am in the final stage of putting the carbs back together, but am confronted with a unexpected problem. The CV slides have a rubber diaphragm on top that has to fit into a circular groove in the top of the carb. The diaphragms seem to have shrunk, I get one part in, and the other side comes out of the groove. I'm thinking that perhaps the heat from a hair dryer might help?

Grease is your friend. Put a light coat in the groove on the top of the carb body where the rubber fits in. Helps keep the rubber in place.
It usually helps if you hold the slide up at about half of it's total travel. Helps to make the rubber 'set' in a more workable, natural shape.
