[EDITED: I meant "Tinsnips"] didn't pop back in here to say this was a valid photo grab, yet.

If & when that happens,
I say the next challenge
is to get a pic with a standing dead tree that's missing most of it's limbs.

One dead long enough that the limbs have rotted off and just fallen down.

This is a Garry Oak tree. Almost but not quite sacred to the Coast Salish. Local group were the Flat Tops.
Not as sacred or tapu as the big Kauri tree in NZ.
It is on the road allowance that will probably never get used. This one is mostly dead, but does show a couple of leaves each year. It is sitting on about 12 inches of soil, over a solid rock base, so the roots must be spread out. The roots need to rot before the tree falls over. Neighbour three doors up has a quite large sample, that is leaning towards to road. Next door also has one that is leaning, but not as big. We are all waiting to see which tree falls first, and takes out the power lines across the street. Branches fall down every time the wind blows hard. Yami is in the pick. UK

If the challenge was just a “dead tree still standing, I could’ve done that on my property, but I thought it was supposed to by mostly devoid of branches?

I found quite a few trees that looked dead, and were missing most of it's limbs. but I decided they were alive, and resting for the winter. I have others to choose from, but I am leaving my Island. Be back next week. UK

I was hoping for a tree whose limbs had fallen off from rot. The tree that you photographed, UncleKrusty, looks unhealthy but it looks like it's got basically all of its limbs and smaller branches intact.
No worries. Next week if no one finds a dead tree first. There is also the problem with snow all about, since I took that pic two days ago. UK

I've been looking for such trees myself as I drive my cage around town. I live in a heavily forested area and I thought this would be easy --it's not! I've only seen one tree that I think is a good candidate for a photograph (Big enough and very obviously dead with most of its limbs gone).

I'm not sure if the road in front of it has a safe parking spot so as to get a picture. I'll try to drive past it again later this week and check that out.

CURRENT CHALLENGE: a pic with a standing dead tree that's missing most of its limbs.

You should get extra points for the tree being bark-less . ;)
It’s is quite dead and rotten. Next heavy rain it might go down the creek, there’s a big one stuck on the dam a block or two from here.

Almost had this one but couldn’t find a safe place to pull off for the picture. 😢
I saw a lot of dead trees on the sides of the highway but chose not to stop for safety reasons too. Finally I went out looking and found these dead trees along the river on a side road, only about a mile from my house in fact.
