Headed to a m-gymkhana event this Saturday. Should be fun.

Has anyone done one of these before?

We charge a couple of euros for our formal events, because we have to rent the space and we have limited insurance for the riders. Other than that, we use some of the same spaces for "informal" events, with no paperwork, at no charge. But then there's no insurance, and no guarantee the space will be available.

We do those every few weeks. We have a couple of spaces that have good tarmac and are big enough and aren't public roads. It's really really fun. Everyone who comes watch us says "no, I'll just watch", then after half an hour they give it a try, and at the end of the day, we have to stop them because we have to clear up the space.
We have spaces in Amsterdam, Lelystad and Krefeld. Earlier this year a couple of us visited the Moto Gymkhana guys in the UK, at Donington Park, which was great fun. There's a group in Poland, there's a group in Ukraine, in NYC, in Canada.

Next year we'll have a formal competition, and after that I'd love to organize an international competition.

It's so much fun.

Unfortunately in the US, to hold and event like this without insurance would be risking financial suicide for the organizers.

Somebody will fall, and a lawsuit may commence.

Then the organizer would have defend, which would cost him lots of money, whether responsible for the fall or not.

That's why we have insurance, as an organization, for our formal events. The other events is just a couple of people show up at a parking lot and practice moto gymkhana.

We've been doing this for a year now, and we have about 50 people show up at our major events.

What I like about the sport is that you can participate on whatever bike you have. I remember a lady on a big Harley that made an awful noise when she made turns, it was scraping the tarmac big time, she was having the time of her life.

We do that in the US too. Most organizations that do these kinds of things have LOTS of insurance.

I was responding to Eye's comments about doing something like this without fees and paperwork.

Unfortunately even "informal" events like this can attract lawsuits if something happens and the lawyers can identify a person or persons who are the organizers.
