I just recently decided to go on a hunt for my first bike.

Cruiser.
Comfortable upright riding position (no laying on tank).
Doesn't sound like a pissed off weed-eater.
Parts available to mod it.
Soft tail preferably.
Preferably older, so I can buy it cheaper.

May come up with more stuff, but those are what I can think of right off the top of my head.

Have you taken the BRC and got you license? It's hard to recommend a bike for someone you just met. Probably the best thing you can do is go to some dealer(s) and sit on a bunch of bikes, which will hopefully give you some insight into what you like.

A HD softtail will be a big heavy first bike.

There are smaller metric bikes that are built with the same suspension setup that may be easier to learn on

Taking the basic riders course is helpful in determining what kind of bike fits you well, too. When I took it here in VA we got to choose between cruisers, dual sports and standard bikes. Was really helpful in finding the right bike for myself. That and ya learn a lot! :)
