Looking For a Good Starter For around $2000-$3000 Used

Taking a class next month to get my license, and I'm ready to start looking for a bike. Looking for a nice used bike for around $2000-$3000.

I've looked at the 250cc Honda Rebels, but I'm afraid they're gonna be too small for me... I'm 6 foot, 160lbs. Are there any bigger bikes around 250-500cc that are near my range?

Honda Shadow VTX600, Suzuki Savage 650, Kawasaki Vulcan 500 and the Yamaha Virago 535 or V Star 650 would fit ya ok I would imagine if you want a cruiser. All those should fall in the under $3000 catagory if they're a few years old with decent miles on them, though the V Star might be a stretch. There's tons of others out there too. Seems like once you hit 750cc in the cruiser line the price really jumps unless you don't mind something older with some miles on it. In sportbikes there are a good many in the 500-600 range and under 3 grand such as the Kawasaki EX500/Ninja500 and 600, Yamaha FZR 600, Suzuki GS500, GSXR600/ Katana 600 and the Honda CBR600f2's. Then there are the naked bikes like the Suzuki Bandit, Yamaha Seca and FJ's and so on. Looks like you'll be out shoppin' soon.

I included 600's since there really ain't much below 500cc out there other than the Vulcan 500, older Shadow 500's, EX500/Ninja 500 and the GS500. If you can find a real nice Kawasaki 454 LTD that would make you a hell of a bike.

So the Rebel would be small for me? Would the 600s be okay for a starter?
Hawaii sucks, I can't find any of those you listed used.

Would an 800cc Vulcan be going too high powered for a starter? They're at around $3500 here, but I'm willing to go that high if I have to.
I think you could start out on an 800cc cruiser as long as you're careful. A 600 would be better if you can find one. A Rebel will cruise highway speeds no problem and will pull ya around real easy.

Would I be comfortable on the rebel? Also would I get tired of it quick?
Yeah you might be comfortable on a Rebel, sit on one for awhile and see if you are.Only you can say if you're comfortable on it. Maico has one and it gets him around real good. He's a bit taller than I am also. I don't know if you'll get tired of it or not.
So I bought a 2006 Virago 250 for $2800. It's small, but it fits me okay, I'm having a blast with it so far.
Cool. Hawaii doesn't suck, I'll trade ya come December :D
