Hey guys,

I know im going to get stuff from just about everyone on this website but im hoping that there is at least 1 person here a little crazier than I am. This is my thought. I want to have somthing to go over my plate at the push of a button or somthing to that effect. I am aware that it is highly illegal to do that but if im riding through bumper to bumper traffic and dont want to get caught, i want to be able to have this option. Has anyone thought of this? I looked online and found alot of photo blockers but i dont want that. I want a full proof shield that blocks all light (such as a metal shield). My thoughts are to glue magnets on the back of the plate, apply hinges some how and have a flip down door or somthing and it will fasten when hitting the magnets. Also was thinking of an instant black out button. If a cover can become jet black in an instant so that nothing can be seen through it. I cant think of how to complete these ideas or how to rig it. If anyone has any crazy ideas please fill me in. and i know most of you are thinking if you wanna do stuff like that, why not just take off the plate? This is because i dont want to get pulled over for no plate, only to have the plate blocked when needed.

Ya know....I've had the need once or twice in all my years of riding to obscure my bikes plate. It's amazing what a little mud and dirt will do and not only was the price right, it didn't appear that I intentionally tried to break the law. ;)
Course, you didn't hear that from me.
BTW. It's really unhealthy scootin twix slow cars. Theres a reason it's against the law. It could get you dead.

It's legal in California and a lot of Europe. In South Africa, they zip between cars at lights and go to the head of the line, and it's culturally acceptable. Of course they also pull to the right and let faster drivers pass, so what does that say about the US?

one step further in Seoul - not only do I thread to the front at stoplights, if it's really backed up I ride (legally) on the sidewalk. Don't have to cover my plate because my Derbi GPR50 is only 50cc and doesn't need a registration tags or anything. I actually now dread driving my car to work (when it rains) because on a bike, I'm immune to traffic jams.

It should be legal here too. It is actually safer in the places where it is used, if you look at the specs. Italian drivers in the North near Milon are very professional and courteous. Here we have the most up tight people in a hurry, not to mention the old ,slow drivers 90 plus on the road. We suck bigtime. Does anyone else have roadrage in their countries?

Lane splitting - a bad idea in America

What you guys don't seem to consider when you sight other countries is that unlike in America, MC on public roads are usually very small 50cc - 90cc for the most part. Riders are not casual hobbiest occassional commuters, they use these little bikes or scooters for commuting every day and for business.

In many places the MC/Scooters far out number Autos. In those environments perhaps lane splitting make sense and is effective. But in the USA with larger MC and MC being seriously out numbered, and with our automobile congestion it does not work as well as overseas.

Most places overseas don't have major high speed well engineered roads or highways nor drive at the speed we are accustomed to.

Make sure you are comparing Apples to Apples, not oranges to apples before you make a case for American style lane splitting.

Ask your self this question. If you were in the Grocery Store in a check out line with a basket full of things, and some guy with fewer items jumped in front of you informing he was in a hurry and so was cutting in front of you. Did not ask you, just bypassed you and got in front of you. What would tell him or do?

Personally, I would tell him if he was in that much of a hurry, he should have been there earlier and been in line before I got in line, I would then assist him, one way or another, to the back of the line! Letting him know that his importance, his impatients, his need to get someplace is no greater than mine.

Your full basket is your car, the guy with fewer items is the MCist, And he is violating American principles FIFO, and all classes are equal no favortism allowed. And escorting him to the end of the line is roadrage. If you want to be in front of the line... get there earlier.

That kind of thinking and action hurts us all

Doing what you are planning is not only illegal, stupid, but hurtful. It gives the non MC public a really nagetive image of us all! If you don't care about the rest of us MCist and the problems you cause us PLEASE GET OUT OF RIDING A MC!

If saw you, your only worry would be how soon the cops could pull me off you! You'd be damn glad to see a cop, paramedic, ambulance at that point!

It is guys like you that need to be purged from our ranks! License suspended, run off the road.

I'd have to agree with COFats here. Your post and your obvious behaivor on the road just tarnishes all of our reputations. Well, technically not my reputation yet, but soon to be. :D Seriously man, you just need to relax and enjoy riding your motorcycle, stop cutting through traffic and covering your plates from the "safe drivers" who are trying to report you because your endangering yourself and everyone else on the road.

Hope you get smart before you get dead.

I dont agree with what your doing at all but I figure if you are really determined to do it you wont care what ne one says. That being said Polarized lenses are actually an amazing thing, you might have to dig on the web a bit to find the right thing but if u can get 2 polarized pieces of plexiglass or glass or plastic (not sure if plexi glass or plastic can even be polarized) and u put them together poles reversed then nothing can be seen threw them. So if u have only one sheet on ur plate it would ust look like a tinted cover, then somehow fashion a second piece, turned the opposite way, to fall on the 1st then Kazam no light passes through making ur tag blocked. I probly didnt make any sence just now but it does work.

I have seen similar applications for house windows. They are actually pretty cool. It doesn't seem practical for a motorcycle though. At least not when there are already flip up kits being made by several companies.

My question is this: if you are going to break the law anyway, why even bother going through the trouble making a contraption to hide your plate? Just try and outrun the police car; if it doesn't work out, you are going to jail in either case, and the money you save not putting gadgetry on your bike can either be applied towards your bail or your casket.

Just a thought since this all started with 'wanted not to be turned in' when lane splitting...

Lane splitting is NOT legal in CA. It's "Permissible if done in a safe and prudent manner". Meaning you can get a ticket for it if you're being a ding dong. Generally that means splitting lanes once traffic is moving more than about 40mph OR traveling 15-20mph FASTER than traffic as you split lanes. Splitting lanes at stoplights is permissible AND cuts down on the motorcyclists being rearended.

All in all 'prudently done' lane splitting is a safe and sane behaviour. I grew up in the SF Bay Area and my bike was primary transport at the time. I really miss NOT being able to lane split in my current home state.

I was reading somewhere that a guy had rigged a 'plate blocking' device on his motorcycle and really pissed off Ponch and John. I would submit that rigging such a device would really encourage the arresting officer to give you the full monty cavity search as well as impounding your ride...

If you can catch me that is, jk jk. Im pretty sure he wont do anything at all as far as a tag concealing device goes, just a big imagination and game of "what if". If he does though, and it was my idea he used, I will gladdly take my road side beating like a man since I had aided him in being an idiot.
