Here's probably the single best article you'll ever read about aftermarket tuning, etc. It's written about cars, but the theory is identical.

When you're done there (and exhausted) head back over to Dr. Dyno's page

When you think you FINALLY understand, but have one burning question left, ask me. I worked at Motorola as a young engineer where we designed and programmed the VERY FIRST all-digital, microprocessor-controlled fuel injection "box" for Robert Bosch --- which went in an Audi, btw.

It was the most fun I ever had as an engineer. Our box sending pulses to the injectors had a single sensor input - manifold vacuum, which gives an indication of engine load, along with a new "lambda" or 02 sensor to tell us if we were running rich or lean. One time we tightened the tolerances up too much --- the distance between the software equivalent of the accelerator pump, and the fuel-cutoff we'd programmed to save fuel whenever you took your foot off the gas -- but RPMs were still above idle.

Well we had the acceleration enrichment and decel fuel cutoff thresholds set too close together. You'd touch the gas and it would squirt a bunch of fuel, the Audi would accelerate HARD, at which point you'd get thrown back in the seat, your foot would come off the gas, at which point the fuel decel would engage, the engine would suddenly STOP making power, you'd get thrown forward, your foot hit the gas pedal again, and again like a bucking Bronco. We laughed so hard we cried as we bucked our way back into the garage.

Good read... Ran my bike on a dyno last week for some baseline runs, hoping to get the PCV tuned here in the next few weeks....
