I too have met Mr. Leno and he is in fact a high class act, doesn't look down upon others and truly loves old machines like I (? we ?) do .

The news of the burns was never good, they waffled a bit at first but it's bad, very bad like Vito says .

I too have had some bad burns from working, I'm pretty sure they were my fault .

yea... I would join up and drive with some drag racer guys ( "Roland Leong,"The Hawaiian", Tom " Mongoo$e" McEwen, "TV" Tommy Ivo, and George Barris), to a 'main street' style car show. Jay would show up, ( nearly always with that massive steam-powered, or his 16 cyl. antique beast ), and he acted like a 'racer fan' when he showed up....
What a nice guy!!

I had one similar scary event many years ago, late 80s I guess,
I was driving a hot rod old Camaro (1968) and I suddenly had a heavy smell of gas. I got out, opened the hood with it still running and realized that I was bending down over a really hot engine and a pool of boiling gasoline that was spraying out of a broken fuel line going to the carburetor ( electric fuel pump) that had filled the V of the engine. I took a few quick steps back as I got soaked with the gas and was not sure if I should run away or get back in and turn off the engine..would that make enough of a spark to set this volatile mess off?
I turned it off and quickly walked quite a few steps back and watched it until it cooled down.
That could have been bad.

Whew!!...scary for sure!

The worst that happened to me regarding gasoline was being overwhelmed by fumes. I was working on the fuel lines under my gas tank in a rather enclosed carport and stupidly didn't take proper precautions, thinking it wouldn't take long to fix. There was still gas in the tank and I got hung up with a fuel line that started spewing gas. I needed one hand to steady the tank that I'd loosened a bit and my other hand to figure out how to stop the leak. Bad situation. The fumes were severely overwhelming. I finally wiggled out of my stupid predicament but felt pretty shi##y from the fumes...and being lame-brained. 😠

Lighting that burner reminded me of those old M67 immersion heaters we used in the Army.
Never trusted them.

For those not familiar, you dribble straight gasoline down a hole fast enough to maintain a fire. (but not too fast )
It will boil 10 gal of water in about 15 min.
There's a technique to it & you usually loose an eyebrow or 2 before figuring it out.

This actually seems like a logical way to create heat because it seems you can generate so much intense heat off a very small amount of wood.

It's pretty cost competitive against solar heater + electric heater for pool. And I can burn up all the yard-waste laying around! Alhough at some point, I'm gonna run out of free fuel... Maybe I'll offer neighbors to take trash off their hands..

I have plenty of used motor oil and that thing would be a good way to get rid of it.

This accident is different.
To start Jay's vehicle a person must intentionally do what we have for years been instructed not to.
It takes special knowledge to be able to accomplish this without incident.

I used the word incident and not safety because safety is not possible and probably one of the reasons these cars don't exist in greater numbers.
Starting this type of vehicle is fundamentally an unsafe act.

I believe Jay was very well aware of this and that is why it was, by definition, an accident.

Yup, similar to manual cranks to start engines. Totally normal at time and people had to know to do it properly. Still, a Cadillac dealer broke his arm demonstrating to customer and that injury lead to his death within a year. This prompted Chevrolet to develop electric starter.

Autos (and bikes) are always evolving for higher performance and safety. Many things we take for granted.
