I had one similar scary event many years ago, late 80s I guess,
I was driving a hot rod old Camaro (1968) and I suddenly had a heavy smell of gas. I got out, opened the hood with it still running and realized that I was bending down over a really hot engine and a pool of boiling gasoline that was spraying out of a broken fuel line going to the carburetor ( electric fuel pump) that had filled the V of the engine. I took a few quick steps back as I got soaked with the gas and was not sure if I should run away or get back in and turn off the engine..would that make enough of a spark to set this volatile mess off?
I turned it off and quickly walked quite a few steps back and watched it until it cooled down.
That could have been bad.

All the work I've done and have never been burned by gas. I start debris fires with gas, work on cars and never had an accident. I did have sawdust explode in my face once throwing it in a wood stove.

Kind of bad thinking of gas burning since most of sit on a gas tank.

Having spent my last 3 years of active duty as the Administrator of the U.S. Army Burn Center I can tell you that there is almost nothing worse to suffer than a severe burn. Hopefully Jay Leno's burns were not 3rd degree burns, i.e., where the entire thickness of the skin was burned, so that he will recover and still look mostly like what he looked like before the accident.

It says they were 3rd degree burns.

Plastic surgery has come a long way since I was involved in burn care, and reconstructive surgery as well. But it is fiction when a severely burned person is shown in a movie or TV being restored to fully "normal" looking even after multiple surgeries. About half of the patients that were treated at the Army's world famous burn center during my time there were civilians, often the worst of the worst that other burn centers felt were beyond their ability to treat. The saddest cases were those that could have so easily been avoided, such as people foolishly pouring lighter fluid on an already burning grill, or not having batteries in smoke detectors in their homes, or adding gas to a totally empty but super hot lawn mower and having the gas vaporize and explode and then ignite the gas container as well. In literally 1/10th of a second the human body can be permanently and seriously burned beyond ever being fully restored and healed. Be careful.

The rule of 9s. Different areas of your body are a certain percentage of the total area - arms 9%, legs 18%, body 27% etc. If the total area burned + your age totals more than 100 I was told it is not survivable.

I thought this was an interesting interview with Leno:

Through all the fame and fortune, he seems to have remained a pretty level headed, eerily normal person. Certainly a rarity in that town.

But I think any car/motorcycle enthusiast can relate. We all prefer to spend our money on something tangible rather than consumables. Keep eating cheap and its another toy in the driveway in no time.

Gasoline leaks can pop up unexpectedly and be pretty dangerous.

Pics from Tuesday: after putting the carburetor back in after having received it back from the shop where it was re-jetted, my friend and I thought we connected all the fuel lines correctly.

We even started the bike in the garage and let it run for five minutes. It ran fine.
At the end of that 5 min. I revv'd the throttle a few times and it sounded good.

Then we shut it down we were in the garage with it for another five minutes while we packed up our tools. Then we close the garage and left everything.

A dozen hours later I look in the garage because I smell gasoline in my front yard...

... and I see a big dark spot a wet spot, a puddle really, underneath my bike. That could've caused a flash-fire.

Glad you had no fire ! .

I too have met Mr. Leno and he is in fact a high class act, doesn't look down upon others and truly loves old machines like I (? we ?) do .

The news of the burns was never good, they waffled a bit at first but it's bad, very bad like Vito says .

I too have had some bad burns from working, I'm pretty sure they were my fault .
