Your battery will have both positive (+) and negative (-) symbols on it beside the corresponding terminal. Connect the red lead to positive terminal and black to the negative terminal.

The Evo I had was certainly a negative earth/ground but it was an 1985. There would be no reason for that to have changed in later models that I know of.
