I'm getting two iron cross tattoos tomorrow, I know it's a symbol that's a bit taboo but to me the iron cross is just a motorcycle thing and that's all. I'm not going to have them done in a bold solid color with trim, when I talked to the artist today we talked about starting out black and slowly fading from black to grays then to white. I liked the idea so unless he comes up with something else that I can't live with out we're doing the fade.

The reason I started this thread is because I thought it may make a good discussion. I'm getting the tats regardless but I am interested to hear what other people think on the matter. We are going to make a point not to make them look like the cross the Nazi's used or even the one Jesse James uses. For me when I think about a tatt that signifies my love of motorcycles and the life it's the Iron cross. Pics tomorrow :)

The iron cross is German (originally Prussian) and pre-dates the National Socialist Workers Party by more than 100 years.

^^This.

There are many symbols in history that were/are corrupted by their use by certain factions.
The swastika itself is an ancient symbol used by Hebrews, American Indians, and is also found in the south pacific, among other places.
The Norse sunwheel is tattoo I have wanted to get, but it's use by the SS has destroyed it's ancient meaning to the point of making it un-uasable. Or at least not worth the constant explaining.

And other then the actual Eisernes Kreuz, (Iron Cross) awards, the Nazis tended to stray away from using that design as they wanted to break with a lot of the past. They used a Balkan Cross as a national identification and used the Swastika more frequently.

I have an Iron Cross of the non-nazi pattern in one of my tattoos as a memorial to family members who served and died for their country. Below it are the Latin words, "Animo et Fide in purpetuum." Courage and faith through eternity.

But how is the iron cross a "motorcycle thing"? I get the origins, and that someone who has one may also have a mc. But how are the two tied together?

I guess because some people that ride bikes, mostly Harleys, started using the symbol a long time ago, and now it's associated with bikes in general?

Kind of like a skull image. So many people that ride use skull images that if you wear jewelry or logos with skulls on them a lot of people will infer that you ride.

But neither image has any particular actual association with bikes.

Sorry Eye, but my translator has your Latin translated to "I am buying the next six rounds"!:coffeescreen:

Iron crosses and skulls, that explains all the bikers I see shopping at the Hot Topic in the mall. Lower prices than genuine HD stuff. ;)

That was my question as well. I dont care what tattoo anyone gets, but I dont see what it has to do with motorcycles.

On a sidenote, do black tattoos get hotter in the sun than other tattoos and/or untattooed skin? I know St Mucus lives in a very hot city, with merciless sun. I have long wondered about this (i have no tats). Anymore likely to get skin cancer on tatted skin?

I think we were voted the most nudist city in America a couple years ago and there're more people with tatts than not so must not be much of an issue. Women have to have their nipples covered with pasties and at least a G-string. I have walked into the grocery store and seen chicks with just pasties and bikini bottoms, some people complain about it but I've learned to deal with it

Fortunately I don't have to work out in the sun for the two and a half months of triple digit heat. I can beat the heat I know not everybody can but during July and August the sun starts coming up around 4:30 AM so we do our rides from 5:00 AM to 10:00 Am temps in the 90's with tolerable humidity.

Just a few.:)

Seriously. I never had the money to get all inked up like a few celebrities do, (such as Jesse James for example.) And a few good friends owned a tattoo shop, but they really weren't that good, so I passed up the free Biker ink.

Well we sat down looked at some designs trying to make it look a little different. We ended up taking a Celtic or gothic design and evening out the cross sections, they're not healed yet so the light grays are a little pink.
The pic of my back with both crosses looks uneven but its just the way I'm standing. We went outside and he put the stencils on with me on my bike so if I don't have my grips in my hands the tats are a little skewed but that was the whole idea. I'll update the pics when it's healed.

Yes, same here, back in the day, people paid for the most awful tattoos.
The amount of badly done snake heads, that I have seen, would fill a book.
Then my buddy in the army, came back to base one day, with the most incredible Chinese Dragon on his arm.
Before I could get one like it....
We were on maneuveres, my buddy woke up, and his forearm was as thick as my thigh.
He got medevacd, and the doctors just lanced the tattoo, to let the pus out
He ended up with a multicolored scar, and I never went for a tattoo
But, in the meantime, I have a collection of decent scars !
As most of you have seen !
