Introducing myself and seeking advice

Hey all! I'm a sophomore in college, and just got into riding this year. I took an MSF course this summer, and have been riding my dad's old Yamaha XT225 all summer. It is a fairly fun bike, however, after about 800 miles on it, I have started to outgrow it. I am completely unsure of what kind of bike to upgrade to, however. There are just so many options today... Since I'm a college student, money is a little tight, and I could feasibly only spend about $4500 maybe $5000 on a used bike. I really want something I could use to commute to class, to make some highway road trips, and just generally enjoy riding. The dual-sport thing is okay, but I really ride on the street about 99% of the time, so off-road capability is definitely not a 'must-have'. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know what region of the country you are in but in the ohio area for the budget you mentioned you can find a nice harley sportster 883. If your a college student all the ladies like it if they can say my boyfriend rides a harley. Besides that they hold their value really well. You may want to check out craigslist.com for a bike in your area reasonably priced.
Thanks for your reply! The FZ6 is a nice bike, however, it's a four-cylinder...My insurer told me that four-cylinder's command a bit of a premium which I don't think I could afford. I'm looking more for a single or a twin. Any other suggestions??
I attend the University of Tennessee. Haha, a sportster is an option, the ladies do like the Harley's and the sportbikes. They're a little small for my frame (6'0" 200lbs), but I'll definitely take that into consideration. Thanks!
Try a used Yamaha Virago, they're big twins and have been around forever.
What size Virago would be best for putting around town and occasional freeway jaunts? 700?
700s are great, good balance between performance and MPG.
Thanks! What about a similar bike to the Virago and Sportster, like a Honda Shadow 750, Vulcan 800/900, or Suzuki Intruder 800?
All good choices, they're all reliable. Best thing to do is to go sit on some at your local dealer, then look for some of the same models on the used market.
I got a new Ninja 500 this summer. They are just a hair over 5 grand brand new and the insurance for me is under $230 a year full coverage.
You could also look into any of the 750 Shadows by Honda, V-stars by Yamaha, on even a little Vulcan would be great. I have a friend that rides a 750 Vulcan from Charlotte to Mt. City, TN.

If your insurer goes by the number of cylinders, I would look for somebody new. The FZ6 should be cheaper to insure because it's a standard and not a sportbike. My 4 cylinder XJ600 was $75 a year to insure, as was my wife's VT500 twin. My Harley 2 cylinder is much more than that. It should be based on displacement and how zippy the bike is, as well as value. Check with Progressive or Allstate, both have pretty good rates.
