Ok i have a 80 Yamaha XS400 Speical that I bought for 25 bucks w/o a title. I just got the bike running so now i need to get the title for it. The bike changed hands manytimes with out transfering the title and no one knows how to contact the original owner of the bike. Is there a website where I can run the plate on the bike and see who it is registered too.

My friend just went through the same thing. He got a KZ400 from some guy and tried to register it with the GA DMV yesterday. He found out that the plate on the bike didn't match the VIN and that the bill of sale he had the guy fill out wasn't going to help him get a new plate. The DMV instructed my friend to got a cop to verify the VIN on the bike and check to see if it had been stolen. Meanwhile, the DMV is going to send a registered letter to the registered owner they have on file in their system. If he (the registered owner) doesn't respond within ten days, the DMV will switch ownership to my friend. The cop came by, verified the VIN and filled out paperwork stating the VIN was xxxxx and that the bike wasn't reported stolen. Now all he has to do is wait the ten days and the bike is his.
