Hiring a mechanic to check out a used bike before purchase?

Hey all,

I'm new to the forum and I was hoping to receive some guidance to purchase my first bike. I know I want to buy used and I think buying from a private seller would save a lot of money. I want to have a skilled mechanic inspect the bike before purchasing. Any idea on how to find a skilled motorcycle mechanic who would be willing to do this (I live in the Philadelphia area btw). How much should you pay a mechanic for this? Thanks!

Oh btw... I took the motorcycle safety course 2 years ago and passed the licensing test at the end of the course. I'm thinking of buying a 2008 Suzuki M50.

Any other tips or direction to another useful thread would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

It should take no more than an hour of shop time to give a motorcycle a once-over.

The seller might be interested in paying for half if not all of the inspection. It's a good selling point for other buyers if you end up passing to have a clean bill of health on the motorcycle.

The first call should be to the Suzuki dealer. Try some independent mechanics in the area as well. Get a few quotes to see who is reasonable on price and thoroughness. They can tell you what things they will check for with the quote.

Check the motorcycle in person first to avoid wasting time and money. If it's really running poorly, you might just want to pass unless the price is taking that into consideration. An inspection and estimate of what it will cost to get it tip-top is always a good bargaining point.
Most shops have what they call a "new car inspection" bike shops I am almost certain would do the same. The shop I worked at did them for $60 where the normal hourly charge was $89, we did it that way in hopes of pulling in new customers, or fixing what was wrong on the vehicle right then or at a later date. It will most likely be the same price or within a dollar or two between the shops, instead of seeking out the cheapest price, find out who does the best work, cheapest is not always best when it come to mechanic work as better mechanics can demand more pay thus the shop charging a bit more.
Stop making sense...

Why would anyone want to have soemone who would recognize problems look at a bike before they buy it? Just too sensible. Spending maybe $50 to avoid spending a thousand... Just plain too sensible.

Do it! Might be the best money you ever spent on a bike.

If it turns out that it is in flawless condition, you will be able to ride with confidence that the bike is mechanically sound. That would be worth $50-100 to me.
I can not tell you how many times I've told people to take a bike to a shop to have at least the service manager listen to it and give it a quick once over. Most shops don't want riders to be disappointed, even if the shop isn't selling the bike. Most are motorcyclists themselves and want others to find the fun in riding, not have to pay because the bike is 90% worn out.
i would find a guy who works in a suki dealer or a suki inthusiast if your looking at a suki because they will know what parts are the common problem childs for the particular model. for instance im a tech at a GM dealer but if i was looking to buy a ford i would give my buddy a call who works at a ford dealer and ask a few questions. the people who deal with the type of bike your looking at getting on a dayly basis is who you should hire. :smiley_drinkcoffee:
Hi there. I was wondering if anyone can tell me of a good and reliable motorcycle mechanic in cheap prices. I need someone to do an inspection and test drive of a bike that I'm interested in. And a costing of said inspection.

How far are you willing to go?

Since there are members on here from all points on the globe, it probably wont help you much if their mechanic happens to be in Australia or something. :D
I am willing to go for 250 miles road trip. actually my license got tipped by cops and they are stopping me to buy any vehicle.

The next question would be where are you located? It helps to have a starting point.
well, I am living in scranton city near by a solar panel. i want to know if you know someone who can come over here and do a inspection for me. I don't trust my local mechanics, last time got ripped off due to advice by a local mechanics. therefore need any recommendation.
I doubt you will find too many mechanics that will make house calls. (Cheaply anyway) I think we may have some members from the PA area that might be able to point you to a decent mechanic or dealership.
