Hey everyone, on friday I'm purchasing a 1991 Honda CBR 600. I don't know anything about motorcycles, but from the looks of it I am getting quite a deal.

The bike runs fine and has had little problems in the past. It is missing front and lower fairings, windshield, and mirrors. He said it would be about 500 dollars to fix the fairings, but I think it'd be more. It has 21,000 miles and the guy says it has a lot of life left and many CBRs go up to 60,000+ miles.

The guy was originally selling the bike for 500 while it was missing a 150 dollar part and wouldn't start. Now, he offered to buy the part and fix it up then sell it for 600. He said he wasn't trying to make money and just wanted to get rid of it.

I thought this was an awesome deal - what do y'all think? How much do you guys think it would cost to get those fairings and other stuff put on? I don't know anything about mechanics - do you think I could do it myself anyway? Is it OK to ride motorcycles without fairings or is it very important to protect the inside workings with them? Thanks!

You can ride it without the lower fairings, like all streetfighter style unless they are needed to hold parts on. You will probably need the upper fairings (as it contains the headlight and other things) and mirrors at the very least. Body parts can be very pricey although you can get aftermarket ones a bit cheaper than Honda ones. They aren't as nice though IMO. You can find fairings reasonable on Ebay but the shipping will kill ya. Probably $500+ for both fairings and mirrors at the least without paint. If you find used ones the same color then no biggie. You may need turn signals and whatnot also. Here's how I do it, figure up what all it needs than times it by 2.5. Figure $600 for the bike, $500 in fairings, $50 for a windshield, a couple hundred for other stuff it needs....get my drift, it may not be worth it.

Sounds to me like it was crashed. I think being you admit you know nothing about motorcycles to stay away from that bike. Sounds like it needs more work than you know how to. However if ya want to learn how to fix bikes, it isn't bad. I'd see how it runs first and have someone who knows bikes real good look at it before you buy. if I were you I'd back away.

hey

The guy said probably nobody would buy his bike if it didn't start, so he's buying the 150 dollar part and is installing it tomorrow. If the bike runs really well should I buy this as my first bike? I heard that CBR 600s are very forgiving and would be a good starter bike if I was careful. What do you guys think? Yes or no? I'm going tomorrow to look at the bike so it would be appreciated if someone gave me their thoughts on the topic.

I'd say yes thats hella cheap. Go for it, pick up a manual if he doesnt have on, and a metric tool kit for your bike (bikebandit.com has the kit you need for 77 bucks) and then you can probably do all the work it needs by yourself.

Ok, well you still need to put the fairings on right? why pay for that its easy i bet, if you have the manual. and a perfectly fine '91 Ninja for $600 bucks? i doubt it, you're probably gonna need the manual ;)

Putting the fairings on is fairly easy and straightforward. Unfortunatly a good many things attatch to the fairings that could be missin' that you need. Thats why I figure up what it needs dollar wise then thimes it by 2.5 so that way there I'm covered. Like I said you can have more in a bike than it's worth dollar wise so where's the savings unless you like doin' that sort of thinga s a hobby, like me.

Like CB750 said there is a lot of work to be done on this bike. If you like working on things are good with your hands, go for it. If your not so good fixing things or don't like fixing things, you could almost pay for a rideable bike for what that one will end up costing you. :)
Also that bike was probably wrecked and that could cost you a lot in both money and your sanity.:D
Best of luck to you!
