I think it would work great for small parts like bolts and small brackets. I don't know about doing a whole rim. JC Whitney used to sell a kit like that.
Where I work they do plating in a different area, gold, palladium, tin, and so on for connectors. I can't get any of them to do a gold plated tank for me though
