I have a 1973 honda CB 450, the tank is very rusted and I have tried repeatedly to clean out the tank, every time the rust seems to return, and it's gotten to the point where it cloged the fuel line and the petcock. I read some about people recommending abrasives others recommending chemical treatments. I'm wondering what is the most accepted method to remove rust, and more importantly keep the rust from coming back.

I would recommend buying a three part kit to coat the inside (cleaner, rust dissolver, sealant). Google around. I just did two tanks of mine with a KBS three part coating kit and I highly recommend it. For around 30 bucks and a couple days work it’s almost as good as new, and you will be able to save the tank you have.

Once cleaned, the tank has to be coated, or as you've seen, it rusts really fast. I like Yamaha Tank Rust Remover kit. It cleans and then coats. Since the tank has been cleaned before, I recommend that you use electrolysis rather than chemicals to clean it up. The tank may be getting thin.
Here are some links detailing how.

Then use the yamaha kit to finish the job.

The Yamaha kit is available from Yamaha motorcycle dealers. They usually carry it in stock on the shelf.

I had a pinhole develop on the lower part of the tank on my 1992 Nighthawk 750. I really fretted about it and the cost of a new tank or repairs to it. I finally figured out that coating internally was an option.

I went with POR-15 which is an excellenet production. It is a 3 part system as well and resulted in ceramic hard lining inside the tank. I have had no issues with it leaking or cracking since.

Cheers,
Eric
