I've got an '05 VStar 1100. I've noticed that at 100 miles on the dot I have to switch to my reserve tank. When I go to fill up I put 3 gallons in it at the most. Is that normal?
i have an 02 vstar 1100 and i can go to 140 before hitting the reserve. how do you ride? if you are on the throttle hard or rev a lot when stopped it can really put a dent in your gas mileage. i know that sport air intakes, loud exhausts and stuff can hurt it too. at least that is what i have been told.
I don't really ride that hard. It's mostly around town. I'll go on a ride about once a week and cruise at about 70-75. I really don't do anything crazy.
do you have any aftermarket parts on it?
i am not sure. maybe that high of a constant top speed. the vstar is a great bike but really needs a sixth gear. i do between 60-65 for 30 min stretches and get about 40 miles to the gallon, give or take.
Wow,100 miles is pritty bad.I usually get between 135-140 before refuling.I still have fuel in my main when going this far but I get verry close to having to use my reserve.I ran out of fuel in my main at 144 once this year.I try to stay out of city driving when I can.I do go on the freeway and usually go 70-75 for several mile stretches.
I would be looking to get a tune up and see if this will help.Something don't seem right with mileage like that.
When I ask these questions,....I know that I'm going take a lot of heat,...but here it goes any way.
When did you notice a chance in mileage?
Did it happen by any chance after you changed from one brand of gas to another (I'm taking a shot in the dark that you didn't change octane)?
The only reason why I'm asking is because I usually run Mobil in my V1100 (2008) because I get the best mileage with it. And a few times I changed to another brand and I noticed a drop in fuel mileage (from 44 mpg to 33 mpg). I have used Shell, B/P and Marathon and that's when I noticed a drop in mileage.
For example,.......today I topped off my tank because tomorrow I'm going to go on a ride for charity. I ended up putting just a shade under 3 gallons in it (I was using Shell in this tank). Now, I've only gone maybe 100 miles since I filled it up.
Know,....I'm not saying that I'm right and everyone else is wrong. You could very well have a carb problem. But before I start pointing fingers at the carbs, just try a different brand of gas or just go back to your brand of gas and see if there's a change in your mileage. If there is, than the gas is the problem. If it doesn't, then it could very well be the carbs or some other problem.
Skooter, I think you're onto something. I have been using Exxon lately (there's on a block from my house) and I've already gone about 130 miles on this tank. I'm going to keep going just because I'm interested to see the limit my bike has. I'll do it a couple of times just to make sure it's consistent.
